This document provides product category rules (PCR) for Type III environmental product declarations (EPD) as described in EN ISO 14025 and EN 15942 for "plastics piping systems" intended for hot and cold pressure, cold pressure, and soil and waste non-pressure applications inside buildings.
This PCR covers the entire life cycle from cradle to grave.
NOTE   The PCR will be applied to all products covered by CEN/TC 155 in this application. A list of product standards is provided in Annex D.
This document specifies the rules for the product category of construction products as defined in and is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 15804.
In addition to the common parts of EN 15804, this document for European plastics piping systems inside building defines:
-   the functional unit;
-   the system boundaries;
-   the elements and conditions of installations;
-   the transport scenarios for both the raw materials and complete systems;
-   the reference service life (RSL);
-   end of life scenarios.

Dieses Dokument stellt Produktkategorieregeln (PCR, en: product category rules) für Typ III Umweltproduktdeklarationen (EPD), wie in EN ISO 14025 und EN 15942 beschrieben, für Kunststoff Rohrleitungssysteme für Druckanwendungen mit Warm  und Kaltwasser, mit Kaltwasser sowie für drucklose Abwasseranwendungen innerhalb von Gebäuden auf.
Diese PCR decken den gesamten Lebenszyklus "von der Wiege bis zur Bahre" ab.
ANMERKUNG   Die PCR werden auf alle Produkte angewendet, die durch diese Anwendung durch CEN/TC 155 abgedeckt werden. Eine Liste der Produktnormen ist in Anhang D enthalten.
Dieses Dokument legt die Regeln für die Produktkategorie Bauprodukte fest, wie in EN 15804 festgelegt, und ist für die Anwendung in Zusammenhang mit EN 15804 vorgesehen.
Zusätzlich zu den allgemeinen Teilen der EN 15804 legt dieses Dokument zu europäischen Kunststoff-Rohrleitungssystemen innerhalb von Gebäuden Folgendes fest:

Le présent document fournit les règles régissant les catégories de produits (RCP) pour les Déclarations environnementales de produits de Type III, telles que décrites dans l’EN ISO 14025 et l’EN 15942, relatives aux « systèmes de canalisations en plastique » destinés à des applications eau chaude et froide sous pression, eau froide sous pression et des applications eaux-vannes et eaux usées sans pression à l’intérieur des bâtiments.
Ces RCP couvrent l’ensemble du cycle de vie du berceau à la tombe.
NOTE    Les RCP seront applicables à tous les produits couverts par le CEN/TC 155 dans cette application, l’Annexe D fournit une liste de normes de produits.
Le présent document spécifie les règles régissant les catégories de produits de construction définies dans l’EN 15804 et est destinée à être utilisée en association avec cette norme.

Introduction

European Standard EN 15804 provides core product category rules for all construction products and

services. It provides a structure to ensure that all Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) of

construction products, construction services and construction processes are derived, verified and

presented in a harmonized way.

This document, based on EN 15804, specifies the Product Category Rules for Environmental Product

Declarations (EPD) of plastics piping systems inside buildings.

An EPD communicates verifiable, accurate, non-misleading environmental information for products and

their applications, thereby supporting scientifically based, fair choices and stimulating the potential for

market-driven continuous environmental improvement.

The standardization process has taken place in accordance with EN ISO 14025. All common issues are

covered horizontally for all product types in order to minimize vertical (branch specific) deviations.

EPD information is expressed in information modules as defined in EN 15804, which allow easy

organization and expression of data packages throughout the life cycle of the plastics piping systems

(constructions) inside buildings. The approach requires that the underlying data be consistent,

reproducible and comparable.

The EPD is expressed in a form that allows aggregation (addition) to provide complete information for

constructions. This document does not deal with aggregation at the building level nor does this

document describe the rules for applying EPD in a building assessment.

The standard deals with a limited number of quantifiable predetermined parameters defined in

EN 15804. Future revisions may incorporate additional predetermined parameters in line with the

changes of EN 15804.

1 Scope

This document provides product category rules (PCR) for Type III environmental product declarations

(EPD) as described in EN ISO 14025 and EN 15942 for “plastics piping systems” intended for hot and

cold pressure, cold pressure, and soil and waste non-pressure applications inside buildings.

5 General aspects
5.1 Objective of the PCR for plastics piping systems inside buildings
As EN 15804.
5.2 Types of EPD with respect to life cycle stages covered

The information in an EPD of plastic piping systems inside buildings based on LCA shall cover all life

cycle stages and information modules from A1 to C4 and shall also include module D (see Figure 1).

NOTE The use of biobased materials could attribute to a lower environmental impact at stage A1.

6.1 Product category

The product category referred to in this document includes all plastics piping systems for inside

buildings applications and related services of all life cycle stages.
6.2 Life cycle stages and their information modules to be included
6.2.1 General

Except: For A4, transport to the building site attention shall be paid on the data used ad most data are

based on weight (tons). In case that specific data are unavailable an average load of 6 000 kg per 80 m

truck can be used.

6.2.4 B1-B5, Use stage, information modules related to the plastics piping systems

6.3 Calculation rules for the LCA
6.3.1 Functional or declared unit
As EN 15804.
6.3.2 Functional unit
As EN 15804, except:

The functional units are defined for pressure and non-pressure applications for a single apartment in

such a way that by a simple multiplication the results could be spread to the entire building under

investigation. The common parts of the piping systems (cellar, risers, down stacks, etc.) shall be taken

into account properly.

For generic (industry wide) LCA/EPD, the smaller building section should be applied.

The piping systems used for the functional unit may consist of:
— pipes;
— fittings;
— sealing;
— valves (if applicable);
— fixing elements (brackets, etc. if applicable);
— etc.

In Annex C examples of a typical PEX pipe system for hot and cold water in the buildings and a PVC-U

pipe system for soil and waste removal in the building system are described. The systems can be scaled

to any size.

The EPD shall present a bill of components and materials included in the FU. This list shall present the

number of pipes, fittings, jointing pieces and valves, with mass per part/piece and total mass. Length

and diameter of pipes shall also be provided.
The following material flows shall be considered:
Product stage:
— Production of raw materials for the plastic pipes, incl. additives/SBR;
— Transport of plastic pipe raw materials to converter;
— Converting process for pipes (extrusion), including packing of the pipes;
— Production of raw materials for fittings;
— Transport of fittings raw materials to converter;

— Converting process for plastics fittings (injection moulding), including packing of the fittings;

— Production of brass fittings, if applicable.
Production raw materials for PP manholes:

— Converting process for PP manholes (injection moulding), including packing of the manholes;

— Production of galvanised steel components (if any) (raw materials + converting process);

— Production of rubber/SBR/EPDM sealing rings (raw materials + converting process).

Construction process stage:
— Transport of pipe system to the site;
— Installation of pipe system in the building;
Use stage (maintenance and operational use):
— Operational use is not applicable;
— Maintenance of the pipe system if relevant.
End of life stage:
— Disassembly of plastic pipe system;
— Transport of pipe system after EOL to an end-of-life treatment;
— End-of-life treatment of the system.

NOTE 1 The design and installation details for buried pipe systems can be found in EN 1610, ISO/TS 10465-1,

CEN/TS 14578, CEN/TS 15223 and CEN/TS 1046 respectively.

NOTE 2 To allow scale-ability the EPD can be expressed in relative terms, e.g. “per meter of system”.

6.3.3 Declared unit
As in EN 15804.
6.3.4 Reference service life (RSL)

Plastics piping systems are regarded having 50 years RSL independent of their material.

recyclates, if appropriate) for all components of the piping system. Data of ancillary components

(sealing, brackets, etc.) should be taken from their producers or generic databases.

For LCA/EPD purposes the most appropriate and representative average data (specific or generic) shall

be used in compliance with EN 15804:2012+A2:2019, 6.3.6. Appropriate publicly available data can be

used for the processes the producer cannot influence (e.g. electricity mix, etc.).

6.3.7.1 General

The product stage shall start with the definition of the composition of the material (recipe including

recyclates if appropriate) for all components of the piping system.

For LCA/EPD purposes the most appropriate and representative average data shall be used in

compliance with EN 15804:2012+A2:2019, 6.3.6. If no specific data are available, appropriate publicly

available data can be used for any upstream processes that is out of producer control, as long as the

project report described the technological, geographical and time related representativity for generic

data used (see also Table 1).

Data of ancillary components (sealing, brackets, etc.) should be taken from their producers or generic

databases.
