Overview
EN 15819:2011 is a European Standard published by CEN that defines a laboratory test method to determine the reduction in thickness of polymer modified bituminous thick coatings used for waterproofing as they dry. The standard covers specimen preparation, required apparatus, controlled conditioning (temperature and humidity), measurement of wet and dry layer thickness, and reporting. EN 15819 is intended for manufacturers, testing laboratories and specifiers of polymer modified bituminous coatings for building waterproofing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principle: Measurement of thickness loss due to drying - the reduction expressed as a percentage of the initial wet thickness.
- Apparatus: Stiff metal or glass plate (min. 25 × 25 cm), a 5 mm-high frame (15 × 20 cm inside), palette knife/trowel, mixing equipment, a penetrometer (or suitable instrument) for wet thickness, and vernier calipers or inductive instruments for dry thickness.
- Specimens: Prepared specimen size 200 × 150 × 5 mm, produced in the frame and struck off flush with the top.
- Preparation: Ready-to-use coatings mixed per manufacturer’s instructions; two-component products mixed with a low-speed mixer to avoid entrained air.
- Test conditions: Conditioning at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity in accordance with ISO 554 for 28 days.
- Measurement procedure:
- Wet thickness measured immediately after preparation at 15 points (five equally spaced points in each third), mean rounded to 0.1 mm.
- After conditioning, dry thickness measured using 12 readings; discard highest and lowest and use mean of the remaining 10 to 0.1 mm.
- Reduction (%) = (wet thickness − dry thickness) / wet thickness × 100.
- Reporting: Test report must identify the product, reference EN 15819, describe specimen preparation and test conditions, provide wet/dry thickness and % reduction, any deviations, and test dates.
- Precision: No precision data are provided in the standard.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers of polymer modified bituminous thick coatings - for product development and quality control.
- Independent testing laboratories - to produce repeatable, comparable thickness-reduction data.
- Specification writers, architects and contractors - to assess expected dimensional changes during curing for waterproofing systems.
- Certification and compliance bodies - as part of evaluation dossiers for product conformity.
