Fasteners - Grooved pins - Half-length centre grooved (ISO/FDIS 8743:2026)
This document specifies the characteristics of grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves (with closed ends), in steel and stainless steel, and with nominal diameter 1 mm to 25 mm.
These grooved pins are designed to fulfil the main following functions:
relative rotation of the assembled parts, and
positioning or guiding,
with an easy installation (due to its symmetrical shape) and a high level of pull-out resistance (due to the elastic fit behaviour of the pin).
The general requirements (including functional principles for grooved pins and assembly) are specified in ISO 13669.

Overview
FprEN ISO 8743: Fasteners - Grooved pins - Half-length centre grooved (ISO/FDIS 8743:2026) specifies the characteristics and requirements for grooved pins with half-length centre oval grooves-commonly referred to as half-length centre grooved pins. Developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and ISO/TC 2, this international standard unifies the technical criteria for these fasteners across global markets. The document covers grooved pins manufactured from steel and stainless steel with nominal diameters from 1 mm to 25 mm, providing a standardized framework for design, production, and application.
Key Topics
- Pin Characteristics: The standard details the dimensions, tolerances, shapes (rounded or chamfered ends), and groove specifications for half-length centre grooved pins, ensuring interchangeability and reliable performance.
- Materials: Pins can be produced from a range of materials:
- Steel
- Stainless steel (grades A1, A2, A4, C1, F1)
- Other materials, such as hardened steels, brass, and aluminium, as agreed between supplier and purchaser
- Surface Finishes: Guidance is provided for coatings and surface treatments, including:
- As processed (for steel)
- Clean and bright (for stainless steel)
- Electroplated coatings (ISO 4042)
- Non-electrolytically applied zinc flake coatings (ISO 10683)
- Phosphate coatings (ISO 9717)
- Functional Requirements: These grooved pins are designed for:
- Ensuring relative rotation of assembled parts
- Precise positioning and guiding
- Easy installation due to a symmetrical shape
- High pull-out resistance as a result of elastic fit design
- Inspection and Quality: Specifies standards for acceptance inspection, labelling, and designation, ensuring traceability and consistent quality control.
Applications
Grooved pins with half-length centre grooves are utilized in diverse industrial sectors due to their robust mechanical properties and adaptable design. Common applications include:
- Automotive: Used for joining and indexing components that require reliable rotational movement or alignment under repeated use.
- Machinery: Serve as positioning or locating elements in assemblies where secure but removable fasteners are required.
- Electronics and Appliances: Employed in subassemblies for precise guiding and ease of assembly.
- General Manufacturing: Suitable as fastening or anti-rotation solutions in tools, fixtures, and mechanical joints.
The design allows for straightforward installation and removal, particularly valuable in maintenance-heavy environments or in applications requiring frequent component replacement.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, in collaboration with the
European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 185 Fasteners, in accordance
with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8743:1997) which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— terms and definitions, principles for grooved pins and assembly (including hole dimensions), control of
the expanded diameter d and pin straightness, mechanical and physical properties (including shear
resistance and hardness) and inspection which are common for all grooved pins (product standards
ISO 8739 to ISO 8747, ISO 13670 and ISO 13672) have been specified in the new reference standard
ISO 13669, general requirements;
— non-preferred diameters 1 mm, 3,5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm have been added;
— values of expanded diameter d for steel pins have been slightly increased for the shortest length range,
and have been added for stainless steel pins;
— tolerances for the rounded end and values for the chamfered end have been added;
— tolerances for the length of the grooves and their location have been added;
— stainless steel grades A2, A4, C1 and F1 have been added;
— other materials (such as hardened steels, brass, aluminium) are by agreement (see Table 3);
— specifications for labelling have been added as Clause 8.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user's national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso.org/members.html.
