EN 17114:2018 (CEN) defines the information to be included in technical and chemical data sheets for water repellent products used in the conservation of cultural heritage. Its purpose is to enable a preliminary, informed selection of the most suitable surface protection products for porous inorganic materials (natural stone, mortar, brick, ceramics, plaster, etc.). The standard focuses on reporting the chemical/physical makeup, application guidance, storage, and performance data required on product technical data sheets.

The standard specifies the data that manufacturers or distributors should provide in a technical data sheet, including:

• Product identification

  • Trade name, manufacturer, distributor, declared primary function (hydrophobic) and any additional functions (consolidating, anti‑graffiti, biocidal, etc.).

• Chemical and physical properties

  • Physical state (solution, suspension, emulsion, liquid, solid), colour, turbidity, density, viscosity, pH, wettability, expiry/ready‑to‑use status.
  • Composition of active ingredients (CAS number, molecular weight, concentration ±5 %, particle/micelle size).
  • Solvent and additive identification (CAS numbers and fractions), impurities and degree of purity.

• Properties of the dry product

  • Curing conditions (time, temperature, relative humidity), dry mass fraction, glass transition temperature (if polymeric), thermal expansion coefficient, average molecular weight, soluble fraction (gel content).

• Use and application

  • Instructions for use, dilution and agitation requirements, recommended application methods (brush, spray, wrap) and product amounts per m2 depending on porosity.
  • Application conditions: temperature range, relative humidity, material water content (as % saturation), and storage/shelf‑life information.

• Performance reporting

  • Laboratory test results (performed according to EN 16581 and related test standards) including test lab name/date, substrate lithotypes (origin, porosity, pore size distribution), specimen details, applied mass (kg/m2), and ageing/irradiation parameters (EN 17036).
  • Measured performance parameters before/after treatment and after ageing: capillary absorption curves and coefficient (AC), water vapour permeability (p), drying rate (D), and low‑pressure water absorption (Wt).

• Health & safety

  • Recommendation to consult safety data sheets; the standard notes potential health and environmental hazards of some substances.
