Overview
EN ISO 11124-5:2021 (ISO 11124-5:2019) specifies requirements for cut steel wire abrasives used in blast-cleaning and surface preparation. The standard covers 13 graded sizes of abrasive made by cutting new cold-drawn wire (virgin wire) and defines particle size ranges, grade designations, and required physical, metallurgical and chemical properties. It is intended for suppliers, specifiers and users of metallic blast-cleaning abrasives for preparing steel substrates (and is generally applicable to other materials prepared by blast cleaning).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Grade system and designation: 13 grades from C250 down to C030 (nominal wire diameters 2.5 mm to 0.3 mm). Product designations use the format e.g. Abrasive ISO 11124 M/CW/C100 (M/CW/C080/570–710HV optionally to indicate hardness).
- Particle size / mass: Each grade has specified nominal sizes and corresponding mass ranges for a sample number of particles (see Table 1 in the standard).
- Hardness: Standard hardness ranges required for ≥90% of particles:
- 390 HV–520 HV
- 470 HV–610 HV
- 570 HV–710 HV
- ≥700 HV (special)
- Apparent density: Minimum specified apparent density (example: min. 7.8 g/cm3) tested per ISO 11125‑4.
- Defects, microstructure and composition: Limits and test methods are given for defective/over‑length particles, cracks, metallographic structure and chemical composition; chemical determinations reference ISO methods (e.g., ISO 439, ISO 629, ISO 9556, ISO 4935, ISO 10714).
- Sampling and test methods: Sampling per ISO 11125‑1; hardness, density, defect, moisture and foreign matter test methods referenced in ISO 11125‑3 to ISO 11125‑7.
- Traceability and marking: Requirements for package identification, lot traceability and information suppliers must provide (grade, hardness, batch, manufacturer data).
- Scope limit: Applies only to abrasives manufactured from virgin, new and unconditioned cold‑drawn wire; does not apply to abrasives during/after use.
Applications and users
Who benefits from EN ISO 11124-5:2021:

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
