Railway infrastructure - Rail fastening systems - Part 6: Test method for resistance to severe environmental conditions (ISO 22074-6:2021)
This document specifies a laboratory test procedure for finding the effect of exposure to severe environmental conditions on the fastening system.
This test procedure applies to a complete fastening assembly including embedded rail with mechanical fastenings. It is not applicable to embedded rail systems relying on adhesive components to secure the rail.

Overview
EN ISO 22074-6:2024 (ISO 22074-6:2021) specifies a laboratory test method for assessing the resistance of rail fastening systems to severe environmental conditions. The procedure evaluates the effect of accelerated corrosive exposure on a complete fastening assembly (including an embedded rail and mechanical fastenings) by subjecting specimens to a neutral salt spray (NSS) test and recording ease of dismantling, reassembly and component condition. This standard applies to mechanical fastening systems only and is not applicable to systems that rely on adhesive components.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Laboratory procedure for complete fastening assemblies mounted on a sleeper, bearer or ballastless track element with a short length of rail.
- Test principle: Expose the assembled fastening to a neutral salt spray in accordance with ISO 9227 and record effects on function and appearance.
- Exposure duration: Neutral salt spray test for 300 hours (as specified in the document).
- Apparatus:
- Salt spray equipment conforming to ISO 9227 (NSS).
- Manual tools normally used to install/remove the clamping device.
- Procedure:
- Visual inspection and documentation of initial condition.
- Assemble rail and fastening on the chosen support.
- Subject specimen to NSS.
- Attempt dismantling and reassembly using provided tools; visually inspect components and record any degradation or failures.
- Test report content (minimum required information):
- Reference to ISO 22074-6:2021, laboratory details, test date.
- Description of the fastening assembly, specimen origin, support, rail section and tools used.
- Changes in appearance of components and any failure to dismantle/reassemble.
Applications and users
This standard is practical for:
- Rail infrastructure engineers and maintenance planners assessing corrosion resistance and maintainability of rail fastenings.
- Fastening system manufacturers and R&D teams conducting product qualification or comparative testing.
- Test laboratories performing accredited salt spray corrosion testing on rail components.
- Procurement and specification authors seeking objective, standardized test evidence for performance under severe environmental conditions (coastal, industrial, or contaminated environments).
Benefits include improved product selection, safer maintenance procedures, validated lifecycle expectations and clearer conformity evidence for procurement and certification.
