Abstract

ISO 14114:2017 applies to acetylene cylinder manifold systems extending from the cylinder valve or the bundle outlet connections to the outlet connection of the main shut-off valve. It specifies requirements for design, materials and testing of cylinder manifold systems for the supply of acetylene for use in welding, cutting and allied processes.
ISO 14114:2017 applies to acetylene cylinder manifold systems in which acetylene single cylinders or acetylene bundles are coupled for collective gas withdrawal.
NOTE National regulations exist regarding limitation of the amount of single cylinders/bundles of acetylene on a single location (e.g. in warehouse or connected to a manifold system).
ISO 14114:2017 also covers a test procedure for decomposition blockers.

prEN ISO 14114 is a draft standard from CEN based on ISO/DIS 14114:2026. It sets general requirements for acetylene manifold systems used in welding, cutting and allied processes, covering design, materials, testing, marking and instructions for use. It is aimed at designers, manufacturers, installers, and users who need to specify, build, check, or operate acetylene supply systems fed from cylinders or bundles.

What does prEN ISO 14114 specify?

prEN ISO 14114 specifies the requirements for acetylene cylinder manifold systems from the cylinder valve or bundle outlet connections up to the outlet connection of the main shut-off valve. The standard is for systems that collect gas from one or more acetylene cylinders or bundles for collective withdrawal in welding, cutting and allied processes.

The document is organized into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Design and materials, Tests, Marking, Instructions for use, and Annex A with system configurations.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex A (normative)Configurations of acetylene manifold systems, with component lists and example layouts

The standard also notes a specific exclusion: a single individual cylinder directly connected with a cylinder regulator according to ISO 2503 is outside its scope.

What are the key requirements of prEN ISO 14114?

prEN ISO 14114 requires the manifold system to include a defined set of components so acetylene can be withdrawn safely and without reverse flow. In practice, that means the designer must build in the right valves, regulators, safety devices and shut-off functions, and then verify the whole arrangement as a system.

System design and component layout

Clause 4.1 requires, among other items, a high pressure non-return valve immediately downstream of the cylinder or bundle outlet, high pressure pipework or hose to the manifold inlet, an automatic quick-acting shut-off device upstream of the manifold regulator, pressure regulators for manifold systems, low pressure pipework, safety devices at the low pressure outlet, and the main shut-off valve. For two-sided systems, a three-way valve may replace two high pressure stop valves. This matters because the system has to control flow direction, limit pressure, and isolate the supply in a way that matches the layout.

Safety devices and alternatives

Clause 4.1 also allows either the listed safety devices or, as an alternative, a decomposition blocker together with the specified supporting devices downstream. High pressure gauges have to meet ISO 15615, with limited exceptions for gauges integrated into devices already covered elsewhere. In practice, this affects what components can be bought separately and what can be accepted as a tested assembly.

Materials and resistance

Clause 4.2 requires materials resistant to acetylene, acetone and dimethylformamide (DMF), and to the mechanical, chemical and thermal loads expected in service. This is the material check that helps avoid incompatibility with gas service conditions.

Strength testing

Clause 5.1 requires strength testing of all high pressure and low pressure manifold components. The high pressure part is hydraulically tested at 315 bar for five minutes, and the low pressure part is pneumatically tested at a minimum of 24 bar unless other standards require more. The practical point is that components must survive likely service pressures without visible permanent deformation.

Tightness testing

Clause 5.2 requires on-site leak testing at commissioning by the installer. The high pressure part is tested at low pressure and at high pressure, and the low pressure part is tested at the maximum outlet pressure of the regulator. This matters because leak-tightness is checked after installation, not only at factory stage.

Marking and instructions

Clauses 6 and 7 require a permanently fixed plate with the document reference, supplier name or trademark, gas type, maximum regulated pressure, maximum flow at 15 °C, operating temperature range, and month and year of manufacture or installation. The supplier must also provide instructions covering application, system description, installation, commissioning tests, maintenance, disassembly, disposal, troubleshooting, hazards and safety precautions.

What terms does prEN ISO 14114 define?

prEN ISO 14114 defines key system terms so users can identify the parts of an acetylene manifold correctly.

  • acetylene manifold systems - An assembly linking one or more gas sources to a user pipeline system and delivering regulated pressure under specified safe conditions.
  • acetylene cylinder bundle - A set of cylinders fastened and interconnected for collective filling and gas withdrawal, intended to be transported as one unit.
  • manifold high pressure pipework - The pipework from the cylinder or bundle outlet at full charging pressure to the inlet of the pressure regulator.
  • flame arrestor - A device that extinguishes a flame front.
  • temperature-sensitive cut-off valve - A device that stops gas flow when a predetermined temperature is reached.
  • pressure-sensitive cut-off valve - A device that stops gas flow when downstream pressure exceeds upstream pressure by more than a set value.
  • change-over unit - A device that switches supply from either side of a two-sided system without interrupting gas supply.
  • decomposition blocker - A safety device that stops acetylene decomposition using a temperature- or pressure-sensitive cut-off device.

Who uses prEN ISO 14114?

prEN ISO 14114 is used by manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and installers of acetylene manifold systems, because it defines what must be built, marked and documented. It is also used by designers, test personnel, and maintenance teams who need to assemble, commission, inspect or refurbish systems for gas welding, cutting and allied processes.

Buyers, quality managers and compliance teams use it to compare offered systems against a common technical basis. In practice, it helps them check whether a manifold system includes the required safety devices, test evidence and user instructions.

What changed in prEN ISO 14114 from the previous edition?

prEN ISO 14114 replaces the second edition, ISO 14114:2014. The foreword states these technical changes from the previous edition:

  • Clause 3 restructured
  • 4.1 revised
  • 5.3 revised
  • Clause 6 revised
  • Clause 7 revised
  • Table A.1 revised
  • Figures A.2 and A.4 revised
  • Figure A.5 deleted
  • Title of Annex B modified

Which standards are used with prEN ISO 14114?

prEN ISO 14114 refers to several companion standards that provide the detailed requirements for parts and methods used in the manifold system:

  • ISO 5175 (all parts) - safety devices for gas welding equipment
  • ISO 7291:2010 - pressure regulators for manifold systems up to 30 MPa
  • ISO 9090 - gas tightness of equipment for gas welding and allied processes
  • ISO 9539 - materials for equipment used in gas welding, cutting and allied processes
  • ISO 10961 - design, manufacture, testing and inspection of cylinder bundles
  • ISO 14113 - rubber and plastics hose and hose assemblies up to 450 bar
  • ISO 15296 - vocabulary used for gas welding equipment
  • ISO 15615:2013 - safety requirements in high-pressure devices for acetylene manifold systems

What does the prEN ISO 14114 document contain?

The document contains the technical requirements and test methods for acetylene manifold systems, together with a normative annex of example configurations. Annex A includes drawings for one-sided and two-sided cylinder or bundle systems and a table that maps the numbered parts used in those figures.

It also contains the procedures for strength testing and external gas tightness testing, so a system can be checked before use and at commissioning. The marking and instructions clauses show what information must be supplied to the installer and end user.
