Earth-moving machinery, and tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry - Seat index point (ISO 5353:1995)

States a method and the device for use in determining the position of the seat index point (SIP) for any kind of seat designed for earth-moving machinery as defined in ISO 6165, and tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry as defined in ISO 3339-0.

Overview

EN ISO 5353:1998 (ISO 5353:1995) specifies a uniform method and the measuring device for determining the Seat Index Point (SIP) for seats used in earth‑moving machinery and in tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry. The SIP is a defined point on the central vertical plane of a seat that serves as a reference for operator workspace design, ergonomics and safety assessments. This standard defines the device, seating preparation, adjustment procedures and reporting requirements to ensure reproducible SIP measurements.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to any seat designed for earth‑moving machinery (see ISO 6165) and tractors/agricultural & forestry machinery (see ISO 3339‑0).
  • SIP definition: The point on the seat’s central vertical plane determined by the specified device. It is fixed relative to the machine and does not move with seat adjustments.
  • Measuring device: A wooden/hardwood device (sanded to 200 grit or equivalent) with defined geometry and masses. Initial device mass: 6 kg ± 1 kg. Additional masses are added in stages to reach 26 kg ± 1 kg and then 65 kg ± 1 kg total to simulate operator loading. The vertical centre of added masses is positioned 40 mm in front of the SIP mark on the device.
  • Seat preparation and conditioning:
    • Allow seat and environment to reach 20 °C ± 2 °C.
    • Seat on level surface; a 75 kg ± 10 kg person sits twice for 1 minute each to flex cushions.
    • Cover seat with a single layer of muslin to minimize friction.
  • Adjustment and suspension:
    • Place seat adjustments (fore/aft, vertical, angular) at centre positions where applicable.
    • Block suspension per manufacturer’s instructions or at midpoint of its oscillation range.
  • Measurement procedure:
    • Place device centrally, ensure it is level and laterally controlled.
    • Take measurements on both sides at equal distances from the central plane and average.
    • Record SIP coordinates relative to the manufacturer’s fixing point to ±1 mm.
  • Reporting: Include reference to the standard, any deviations, test conditions, a drawing/sketch showing coordinates between fixing point and SIP, and descriptions of relevant adjustment ranges.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Seat manufacturers specifying SIP for product data sheets
  • OEMs of earth‑moving and agricultural/forestry machinery for operator workspace design
  • Ergonomists and human‑factors engineers assessing operator posture and reach
  • Test laboratories and compliance officers performing seat testing and certification
  • Designers integrating seats into cab layouts and safety systems

Frequently Asked Questions

EN ISO 5353:1998 is a standard published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Its full title is "Earth-moving machinery, and tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry - Seat index point (ISO 5353:1995)". This standard covers: States a method and the device for use in determining the position of the seat index point (SIP) for any kind of seat designed for earth-moving machinery as defined in ISO 6165, and tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry as defined in ISO 3339-0.

EN ISO 5353:1998 is classified under the following ICS (International Classification for Standards) categories: 53.100 - Earth-moving machinery; 65.060 - Agricultural machines, implements and equipment. The ICS classification helps identify the subject area and facilitates finding related standards.

EN ISO 5353:1998 is associated with the following European legislation: EU Directives/Regulations: 98/37/EC. When a standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, products manufactured in conformity with it benefit from a presumption of conformity with the essential requirements of the corresponding EU directive or regulation.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 5353 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 127, Earth-moving machinery, Subcommittee SC 2, Safety re-
quirements and human factors.
