Thermal insulation products for buildings - External thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) based on mineral wool - Specification

This European Standard specifies the requirements for factory made products for external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) based on mineral wool, delivered as a kit, and used as thermal insulation for buildings.
The standard describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, marking and labelling.
ETICS are applied to external surfaces of new or existing walls and/or soffits to improve the thermal insulation. ETICS include special fittings (base profiles, corner profiles, etc.) to connect them to adjacent building structures (apertures, corners, parapets, etc.). ETICS give protection against weathering and improve the appearance of the buildings. They do not contribute the stability of the wall and/or soffits on which they are installed.
The standard covers systems where the thermal insulation material is required for the load transfer to the substrate.
This standard covers systems with a declared thermal resistance equal to or greater than 1 m²×K/W.
The requirements from national regulations concerning the mechanical resistance and stability of ETICS should be taken into account.
This standard does not cover the strength between the ETICS and the building surface to which it shall be fixed, i. e. the substrate.

Overview

EN 13500:2003 specifies requirements for factory-made external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) based on mineral wool (MW), delivered as a kit and intended for application to external walls and soffits. The standard defines the system components (adhesive, MW boards, base coat with reinforcement, reinforcement mesh, finishing material, mechanical fixings and profiles), required product characteristics, test methods, marking and labelling and production control. EN 13500 applies to systems with a declared thermal resistance ≥ 1 m²·K/W and to systems where the insulation is used for load transfer to the substrate. It does not cover the strength of the connection between the ETICS and the building substrate itself.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and system definition: ETICS as on-site applied kits where all components are system-specific and designed by the system manufacturer.
  • Declared thermal performance: Systems with declared thermal resistance ≥ 1 m²·K/W are covered; declared thermal conductivity and board resistance must be provided.
  • Materials and components: Requirements for MW boards, adhesives, base coats, reinforcements (glass-fibre meshes), finishing materials, mechanical fixings and special profiles.
  • Mechanical and durability tests:
    • Bond strength of base coat and adhesives to MW boards
    • Pull-off resistance (foam block test) for mechanically fixed ETICS
    • Resistance to impact and penetration
    • Liquid water permeability of the system surface
    • Water vapour permeability
    • Tensile strength of reinforcement
    • Reaction to fire classification and non-combustibility testing (see referenced test standards)
  • Production control & documentation: Annex A covers factory production control; detailed marking and an accompanying document listing all kit components and their characteristics are required.
  • Conditioning and sampling: Procedures for preparing test specimens and sampling are specified to ensure reproducible test results.
  • Limitations: The standard does not replace national regulations on mechanical resistance and stability; substrate fixity is outside its scope.

Applications

  • Upgrading thermal performance of existing façades and new build external walls and soffits
  • Weather protection and aesthetic finishing of building envelopes
  • Use where mineral wool-based ETICS are required for both insulation and load transfer functions (consistent with the standard’s scope)

Who should use this standard

  • ETICS system manufacturers and component suppliers (adhesives, meshes, MW boards)
  • Specifiers, façade engineers, architects and façade contractors selecting or installing mineral wool-based ETICS
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing conformity assessment and reaction-to-fire testing
  • Building authorities and code officials assessing compliance with European ETICS requirements

These factory-made products are delivered as a kit and are used to improve the thermal insulation of buildings. The standard covers product characteristics, testing procedures, marking, and labeling. ETICS are applied to the external surfaces of walls and soffits to enhance insulation and improve the appearance of buildings. However, they do not contribute to the stability of the wall or soffits. The standard applies to systems where the thermal insulation material is required for load transfer to the substrate, and the declared thermal resistance should be equal to or greater than 1 m²×K/W. National regulations regarding the mechanical resistance and stability of ETICS should also be considered. The standard does not address the strength between the ETICS and the building surface it is attached to, known as the substrate.
