Slurry surfacing - Test methods - Part 3: Consistency

This European Standard specifies a test method for determining the consistency of slurry surfacing mixtures. This test is dedicated to Slurry Seals (D ≤ 4mm).
NOTE 1   The method can be used as a mix design aid to determine the amount of water required to form a stable, workable mixture.
NOTE 2   To obtain the correct consistency, it can be necessary to repeat the test with different known percentages of water.
This European Standard applies to slurry surfacings for roads, airfields and other trafficked areas.

Overview

EN 12274-3:2018 (CEN) defines a laboratory test method for determining the consistency of slurry surfacing mixtures. The method is dedicated to Slurry Seals (maximum particle size D ≤ 4 mm) and applies to slurry surfacings for roads, airfields and other trafficked areas. The procedure helps determine the workable consistency of slurry sealing mixes and can be used as a mix design aid to establish the amount of water required to form a stable, workable mixture.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Consistency test for slurry surfacing mixtures (Slurry Seals, D ≤ 4 mm).
  • Purpose: Assess slurry flow to guide mix design (pre-wetting water, emulsion content) and confirm field-appropriate consistency.
  • Apparatus (high level):
    • Frustum-of-cone mould (75 ± 1 mm height; top Ø 40 ± 1 mm; bottom Ø 90 ± 1 mm).
    • 250 × 250 mm metallic template with an indelible flow scale of eight concentric circles (inner circle Ø 90 mm, radii steps 10 mm).
    • Balance (0.1 g resolution), beaker ≥ 0.5 L, stirring rod, oven (110 ± 5 °C).
  • Sample and conditions:
    • Typical sample mass: 400 ± 5 g dry aggregate (or corrected for natural moisture).
    • Test temperature: ambient (23 ± 5) °C.
    • Aggregate moisture determined per EN 1097-5 if wet.
  • Procedure summary:
    • Homogenize emulsion; prepare mix with aggregates, filler, additives and pre-wetting water.
    • Fill mould placed on non-absorbent flow sheet; lift mould and allow slurry to flow.
    • Measure flow after (10 ± 2) s at four equidistant points and average.
  • Results and reporting:
    • Expressed as slurry flow (mm) and reported alongside pre-wetting water (%), bitumen emulsion (%), test temperature, deviations, and other metadata.
    • Test precision (repeatability/reproducibility) is not provided in the standard.

Applications and users

  • Practical for:
    • Pavement engineers and technologists performing mix design of slurry seals.
    • Construction contractors and quality control (QC) laboratories verifying workability and consistency before field application.
    • Specification authors and road authorities setting acceptance criteria for slurry surfacing.
  • Benefits:
    • Helps optimize water and emulsion contents to achieve a stable, non-segregating slurry with adequate flow for uniform coverage.
