Overview

EN 13742-2:2004 (CEN) defines the test and inspection procedures used to verify the correct operation and performance of solid set sprinkler irrigation systems installed in accordance with EN 13742-1. This part focuses on practical start-up checks, hydraulic measurements and distribution uniformity testing to confirm system integrity and compliance with design documentation.

Key objectives: confirm water tightness, validate hydraulic performance, measure distribution uniformity and document results for compliance and commissioning.

• Pre-pressurization inspection and flushing: verify installed materials and locations against the bill of materials and design plans. Pipes shall be flushed prior to pressurization to remove installation debris.

• Preliminary pressurization: main-lines and sub-mains are pressurized at 1.5 times the operating pressure before backfilling trenches to detect leaks or damage.

• Visual inspection at start-up: with the system at nominal operating pressure, check:

  • water tightness of the network;
  • absence of leaks between components;
  • sprinkler rotation and operation;
  • riser verticality and stability;
  • valve operation;
  • correct installation per manufacturer instructions.

• Hydraulic measurements: record

  • inlet pressure;
  • total system flow (within ±5% of the project flow);
  • pressures at the most and least pressurized lateral sprinklers on each sub-unit (individual measurement accuracy ±5%). Pressure variation between those sprinklers shall not exceed 20% of the design layout plan pressure.

• Distribution uniformity tests: performed in accordance with ISO 7749-2 to verify sprinkler spacing and water distribution. Key elements include:

  • test area matching the design spacing pattern (square or triangular);
  • measurement of at least two representative areas per sub-unit (most and least pressurized zones);
  • use of identical cylindrical rain gauges with sharp edges, minimum height 15 cm and opening diameter between 0.5 and 1.0 times the height (not less than 8.5 cm);
  • control of atmospheric conditions and wind (per ISO 7749 requirements);
  • pressure maintained at design value with an accuracy of ±20 kPa;
  • minimum test duration: 1 hour.

• Uniformity calculation: compute the Christiansen uniformity coefficient (C C) from collected catch can depths as specified in the standard.
