Overview

EN 10363:2016 (CEN) defines tolerances on dimensions and shape for continuously hot-rolled, uncoated patterned steel strip and sheets/plates cut from wide strip (nominal thicknesses up to 20 mm). It applies to non‑alloy and alloy steels referenced to EN 10025 series and EN 10149‑2 (see Annex A) and explicitly excludes stainless steels. The standard covers form of supply, surface design options (designs T, R, A), pattern height ranges and the dimensional tolerances that manufacturers, purchasers and inspectors must use.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and materials: Applies to patterned ("chequer" or "bulb") hot‑rolled strip and cut sheets/plates up to 20 mm nominal thickness; other steel grades permitted only by agreement.
  • Product information to supply: quantity, product type (wide strip, sheet/plate, slit strip), EN number, surface design symbol (T/R/A), nominal thickness, width, length, steel grade, edge‑camber requirements for slit strips.
  • Pattern dimensions: Pattern height h specified by nominal thickness - for t ≥ 3.0 mm: h = 1.0–2.2 mm; for t < 3.0 mm: h = 0.5–2.2 mm.
  • Thickness tolerances: Tabled by nominal thickness; tolerances increase with thickness (examples given in EN 10363 Table 2).
  • Width tolerances: Normal tolerances typically 0 / +20 mm for widths < 1 500 mm and 0 / +5 mm for widths ≥ 1 500 mm; special tighter tolerances (trimmed edges) available by agreement for thin products.
  • Length tolerances: e.g., +20 mm for lengths < 4 000 mm, +30 mm for 4 000–6 000 mm, +40 mm for 6 000–8 000 mm (longer lengths by agreement).
  • Flatness, edge camber and out‑of‑squareness: Flatness limits depend on nominal thickness and width (see Table 5). Edge camber and out‑of‑squareness are specified (e.g., edge camber limits for sheets/plates and strip, superimposition option by agreement).
  • Testing and inspection: Measurement points and procedures are defined - thickness measured outside patterned zones and minimum edge distances (40 mm for mill edges, 25 mm for trimmed edges). Measurements for dispute must be at ambient temperature.

Applications and practical use

EN 10363:2016 is used to specify and verify dimensional quality of patterned steel used for:

  • Industrial flooring, stair treads, platforms and ramps (non‑slip surfaces)
  • Vehicle decks, loading platforms and walkways
  • Structural and architectural panels where patterned surfaces are required

Using EN 10363 ensures compatibility between mills, distributors, fabricators and purchasers by providing consistent tolerances on thickness, width, length, flatness and edge geometry.

Who uses this standard

  • Steel producers and rolling mills (product specification and quality control)
  • Steel service centres and distributors (acceptance and stock control)
  • Fabricators, architects and specifiers (material selection)
  • Inspection bodies and testing laboratories (conformity testing)

Related standards

  • EN 10025 series (structural steels)
  • EN 10149‑2 (high‑strength steels)
  • EN 10020, EN 10079 (definitions and steel product terminology)
