Overview

EN 10149-2:2013 - Hot rolled flat products made of high yield strength steels for cold forming (Part 2: Technical delivery conditions for thermomechanically rolled steels) specifies the technical delivery requirements, in addition to EN 10149-1, for weldable, hot-rolled, high-yield-strength steels supplied in the thermomechanically rolled condition. The standard defines applicable steel grades (see Table 1 for chemical composition and Table 2 for mechanical properties), thickness limits by minimum yield strength, delivery condition, testing and inspection rules.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and grades: Covers steels supplied as thermomechanically rolled flat products. Grades include S315MC through S960MC (chemical and mechanical values are given in Tables 1 and 2 of the standard).
  • Thickness ranges by yield strength:
    • 1.5–20 mm for grades with specified minimum yield 315–460 MPa
    • 1.5–16 mm for grades with specified minimum yield 500–700 MPa
    • 2–10 mm for grades with minimum yield 900–960 MPa
  • Delivery condition: Products are supplied in the thermomechanically rolled condition (see clause 7.2).
  • Chemical composition & testing: Ladle analysis limits are specified (Table 1). Verification and sampling procedures follow the inspection clauses and EN 10149-1.
  • Mechanical properties: Requirements for tensile, yield and (if ordered) impact properties are defined (Table 2). Note: heating S900MC and S960MC above 400 °C is not recommended - any post‑heating property requirements must be agreed at order.
  • Formability and manufacturability: Cold forming guidance is included (Annex B gives indicative inside bend radii). Products are suitable for flanging; roll forming suitability follows EN 10149-1.
  • Weldability and surface: Weldability criteria and surface finish requirements reference EN 10149-1. Internal soundness, marking and inspection documentation are also specified.
  • Hot-dip galvanizing: For S315MC–S700MC, galvanizing suitability requires prior agreement on chemical composition (Si and P categories) per EN ISO 14713-2; steels above S460 may be sensitive to galvanizing cracking.

Applications and who uses it

  • Primary users: Steel producers, mill quality engineers, purchasers/specifiers, fabricators, cold-forming shops, structural and automotive component manufacturers, galvanizers and testing laboratories.
  • Typical applications: Cold-formed structural sections, automotive components, fabricated profiles, flanged parts and roll‑formed products where high yield strength and cold formability are required.
  • Practical value: Ensures consistent supply quality, defined testing and inspection regimes, predictable cold-forming performance and clear communication of options between purchaser and manufacturer.
