Neoblikovani ognjevzdržni izdelki - 8. del: Ugotavljanje komplementarnih lastnosti (ISO 1927-8:2012)

Overview

EN ISO 1927-8:2012 is an international standard developed by ISO and adopted by CEN, focusing on monolithic (unshaped) refractory products. Specifically, Part 8 details the determination of complementary properties of unshaped refractory materials. These methods apply to test pieces prepared and stored following ISO 1927-5 and are complementary to property measurements addressed in ISO 1927-6. The standard adapts procedures originally designed for shaped refractory products, making them suitable for dense and insulating castables, as well as ramming materials, before and after firing.

This standard is essential for industries relying on accurate characterization of refractory materials that resist high temperatures, chemical exposure, and mechanical wear, ensuring materials meet performance criteria for structural integrity and durability.

Key Topics

  • Test Piece Preparation: Methods require test pieces to be prepared according to ISO 1927-5, ensuring consistent sample conditioning before testing.

  • Permeability to Gases: Utilizes test pieces dried and/or fired, then measured per ISO 8841 to assess gas permeability, a critical factor in refractory durability and performance.

  • Thermal Shock Resistance: Measures material resistance to rapid temperature changes, using test pieces fired to standardized temperatures and tested following EN 993-11 guidelines.

  • Thermal Conductivity: Determines heat transfer properties of both fired and unfired refractory materials using hot-wire methods (ISO 8894-1 and ISO 8894-2). Accurate assessment supports thermal efficiency and insulation design.

  • Chemical Resistance: Includes tests for sulfuric acid resistance and resistance to carbon monoxide, based on ISO 8890, ISO 12676, and ISO 10060 protocols, essential for refractory materials exposed to chemical environments.

  • Carbon-Containing Products and Abrasion Resistance: Specific procedures address refractory products with carbon content and their wear resistance at ambient temperature (ISO 16282).

  • Test Reporting: Standardizes documentation to ensure transparency and reproducibility of test results.

Applications

EN ISO 1927-8:2012 is critical for:

  • Steel and Metallurgical Industries: Ensuring refractory linings in furnaces and reactors perform reliably under thermal cycling, gas exposure, and chemical attack.

  • Chemical Processing Plants: Verifying materials resist corrosive gases like sulfuric acid and carbon monoxide, extending equipment lifespan.

  • Ceramics and Glass Manufacturing: Optimizing thermal insulation and reducing energy losses by selecting materials with appropriate thermal conductivity.

  • Construction of Thermal Insulation Systems: Applying precise measurements of gas permeability and abrasion resistance to improve safety and durability.

  • Quality Control Laboratories: Using standardized test methods to certify product compliance with required physical and chemical durability standards.

Related Standards

EN ISO 1927-8:2012 works in conjunction with several other standards to provide comprehensive refractory testing:

  • ISO 1927-1: Introduction and classification of monolithic refractories
  • ISO 1927-5: Preparation and treatment of test pieces
  • ISO 1927-6: Measurement of physical properties (complementary to Part 8)
  • ISO 8841: Determination of permeability to gases
  • ISO 8890 and ISO 12676: Chemical resistance tests
  • EN 993-11: Thermal shock resistance testing for shaped refractories
  • ISO 8894-1 and ISO 8894-2: Thermal conductivity measurement by hot-wire methods
  • ISO 10060: Test methods for refractory products containing carbon
  • ISO 16282: Abrasion resistance at ambient temperature

By integrating these standards, EN ISO 1927-8:2012 ensures thorough characterization of unshaped refractory materials, supporting improvements in material selection, quality assurance, and operational safety in high-temperature industrial environments.

Optimizing refractory material testing with EN ISO 1927-8:2012 ensures your unshaped refractory products meet stringent industry demands for thermal stability, chemical resistance, and mechanical durability, driving performance and longevity in critical applications.
