Overview

EN 12934:2025 Feather and Down - Composition Labelling of Processed Feathers and Down for Use as Sole Filling Material is the authoritative European standard developed by CEN for the labelling of feather and down used as fillings in manufactured products. This standard specifies clear provisions for identifying the composition of feather and down fillings according to the type of plumage and the fowl species of origin (waterfowl or landfowl). It ensures that material labelling remains accurate and consistent through all stages of the commercial distribution chain. EN 12934:2025 supersedes the 1999 edition and integrates essential updates that align with evolving practices and market needs in the textiles and bedding sectors.

Key Topics

  • Composition Labelling

    • Requires precise percentages for feather, down, and “other elements.”
    • Specifies classification (Class I, II, III) based on the content of other elements (e.g., feather fibres, broken feathers).
  • Fowl Species Identification

    • Mandates clear labelling of whether the feather/down is from waterfowl or landfowl.
    • Allows optional indication of specific species (e.g., goose, duck), depending on composition percentages.
  • Fill Power Labelling

    • Provides an optional system for stating fill power.
    • Ensures fill power (massic volume) is measured and disclosed according to standardized test methods.
  • Tolerance and Testing

    • Establishes tolerances between labelled percentages and lab-tested results to allow for minor, unavoidable deviations.
    • References standardized methods for sampling and analysis.
  • Distribution Chain Requirements

    • Ensures all commercial documents and labels clearly state the composition, supporting traceability throughout the supply chain.

Applications

EN 12934:2025 is applicable to:

  • Textile Industry: Used by manufacturers of bedding, clothing, and upholstery that incorporate down or feather as the sole filling material.
  • Retail and Distribution: Ensures that products are accurately labelled at all points of sale and throughout the supply chain, from manufacturer to retailer to end consumer.
  • Quality Assurance: Supports processes for quality control, product certification, and meeting regulatory or market demands for product transparency and consumer information.
  • Product Labelling Compliance: Helps brands and importers meet European legal and consumer expectations regarding the authenticity and composition of feather and down-filled products.

The standard is not applicable to filling materials containing more than 2% foreign matter, hence focusing on high-purity, processed feather, and down applications.

Related Standards

  • EN 1883: Feather and down-Sampling in view of tests
  • EN 1885:2018: Feather and down-Terms and definitions
  • EN 12131:2018: Feather and down-Test methods-Determination of the quantitative composition of feather and down (manual method)
  • EN 12130: Feather and down-Test methods-Determination of the fill power (massic volume)
  • EN ISO 14021:2016: Environmental labels and declarations-Self-declared environmental claims (Type II environmental labelling)

These related standards collectively ensure that all processes relating to feather and down product labelling, sampling, composition analysis, and environmental claims are consistent, traceable, and reliable across the industry.

EN 12934:2025 provides vital guidance for ensuring honest, transparent, and uniform composition labelling of feather and down fillings, supporting both regulatory compliance and consumer trust in finished textile products. For manufacturers, retailers, and quality professionals, adherence to this standard reinforces product integrity and facilitates market credibility across Europe and beyond.
