Overview
EN 2387:2018 is a European Standard developed by CEN for the aerospace sector, specifying the requirements for aluminium alloy 2014A-T6 tubes intended for structural applications. These tubes have wall thicknesses ranging from 0.6 mm to 12.5 mm and are widely used in the production of parts for aircraft structures due to their balance of strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. The standard provides guidance on chemical composition, delivery conditions, production requirements, and relevant test methods for this specific aluminium alloy, ensuring consistency and quality in aerospace manufacturing.
Key Topics
- Material Specification: EN 2387:2018 covers tubes manufactured from aluminium alloy 2014A in the T6 temper, which means they are solution heat-treated and artificially aged to achieve specific mechanical properties.
- Dimensional Requirements: The standard applies to round structural tubes with wall thicknesses from 0.6 mm up to 12.5 mm, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of aerospace structure designs.
- Mechanical Properties: Sets minimum thresholds for proof stress, tensile strength, and elongation. The standard ensures that tubes meet rigorous strength and reliability requirements demanded by aerospace applications.
- Delivery Condition: Tubes must be supplied in the T6 heat-treated condition, suitable for immediate use in structures without further treatment.
- Testing and Inspection: References key test methods including flattening tests and residual stress testing, as well as dimensional and marking inspection procedures.
Applications
EN 2387:2018 is critical for various stakeholders in the aerospace industry:
- Aircraft and Spacecraft Structures: Provides the foundational requirements for aluminium alloy tubes used in airframe, fuselage, wing, and other structural components.
- Manufacturers and Suppliers: Ensures consistent material properties and dimensions, simplifying quality assurance and streamlining supply chain processes.
- Design Engineers: Enables optimal design choices for lightweight, high-strength structures by specifying mechanical properties and form factors.
- Certification and Compliance: Assists regulatory bodies and quality managers in verifying compliance with industry standards for metallic materials in aerospace projects.
- Maintenance and Repair: Guides sourcing of replacement parts that conform to stringent quality and safety requirements.
Related Standards
EN 2387:2018 refers to and aligns with several other key standards in the aerospace and aluminium industries:
- EN 2002-10: Aerospace series - Metallic materials - Test methods - Tube flattening test.
- EN 2004-6: Aerospace series - Test methods for aluminium and aluminium alloy products - Residual stress testing.
- EN 2070-1 & EN 2070-4: Aerospace series - Aluminium and aluminium alloy wrought products - General and tube-specific technical specifications.
- EN 2257: Aerospace series - Circular tubes for structures in aluminium and aluminium alloys.
- EN 4258: General organization of standardization for metallic materials in the aerospace sector.
- EN 4500-2: Drafting and presentation rules for aluminium, aluminium alloys, and magnesium alloys standards.
