Overview
EN 716-1:2017+AC:2019 is the CEN European safety standard for children's cots and folding cots for domestic use (internal length > 900 mm and ≤ 1 400 mm). Part 1 defines mandatory safety requirements that apply to cots delivered fully assembled and ready for use. The document includes Corrigendum 1 (March 2019) and sits alongside EN 716-2:2017, which provides the corresponding test methods.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Domestic cots only; excludes carry cots, cribs and cradles (separate standards apply). Applies to units convertible to other furniture (additional rules may apply).
- Materials & surfaces: Accessible parts must meet EN 71‑3 migration limits. Textiles/coatings/plastics must meet flammability limits (EN 71‑2: maximum rate of spread 30 mm/s) and EN 1103 (no flash-effect).
- Stability: Initial and final stability requirements verified by tests in EN 716‑2 (cot must not overturn).
- Construction & finishing:
- Edges and protrusions must be rounded/chamfered and free of burrs.
- Self‑tapping screws are prohibited where components are intended to be removed for transport.
- Labels/decals are restricted on internal surfaces.
- Small detachable parts must not fit the small parts cylinder (choking hazard).
- Openings, gaps and entrapment:
- Specific dimensional limits for holes/gaps (e.g., exclusions and permitted gap ranges) are defined and checked using test cones described in EN 716‑2.
- Head‑entrapment rules for external openings and mesh sides are detailed.
- Shear, squeeze and snag points: Rules for moving parts, including powered/spring mechanisms, to prevent body part injury.
- Locking systems:
- Folding cots require secure locking (two locks if folding inward).
- Locks must meet functional criteria (e.g., residual force ≥ 50 N or require multi‑action operation).
- Cot base & mattress:
- Folding mattress bases must not collapse during test cycles.
- Adjustable bases must require a tool or locking system to lower.
- Mattress size and compatibility requirements are specified.
- Packaging, instructions & marking: Manufacturer obligations for user instructions, warnings (including warning about adding a second mattress), and marking are covered.
Applications - who uses this standard
- Cot manufacturers and product designers (to design compliant domestic cots and folding cots)
- Importers, distributors and retailers (to verify products meet EU safety requirements)
- Test laboratories and certification bodies (use EN 716‑2 test methods to validate compliance)
- Product safety engineers and regulatory affairs specialists (to prepare technical documentation and instructions for use)
- Child-safety consultants and procurement teams for childcare settings

- EN 71‑1 / EN 71‑2 / EN 71‑3 - Safety of toys (mechanical, flammability, migration)
- EN 1103 - Textile burning behaviour test methods
Using EN 716-1:2017+AC:2019 ensures children's cots meet harmonized safety requirements, reducing risks from entrapment, falls, flammability and mechanical failures - essential for compliance across EU markets.

The article discusses the European Standard EN 716-1:2017+AC:2019, which outlines safety requirements for children's cots and folding cots used in homes. The standard specifically covers cots with an internal length between 900mm and 1400mm. It applies to fully assembled cots that are ready for use, but additional requirements may apply to cots that can be converted into other items such as changing units or playpens. It is important to note that this standard does not apply to carry cots, cribs, and cradles, as separate European standards exist for these items.
