Overview

prEN 17450-4:2026 is a CEN draft standard focusing on fixed firefighting systems, specifically the components used in water mist systems. Part 4 of the standard addresses the requirements and test methods for deluge valves and their actuators, which are critical safety devices designed to control the water flow in fire suppression scenarios. Deluge valves, when actuated, allow water to enter a system of open nozzles, enabling fast and efficient distribution of water mist to suppress fires.

This standard applies to all types of deluge valves-including mechanically, electrically, pressure, and manually actuated variants-used within water mist firefighting systems. Valves tested according to EN 12259-9 are recognized as compliant with the requirements of prEN 17450-4.

Key Topics

  • Design and Construction
    • Deluge valves must be made from materials resistant to media encountered in service.
    • Standardized threaded connections per international or relevant national norms.
  • Performance Requirements
    • Valves must demonstrate suitable strength, leak resistance, and resilience under cycling (opening/closing and pressure changes).
    • Resistance to vibration, corrosion (salt spray), and extreme temperatures are tested for robust performance in challenging environments.
  • Functional Testing
    • Correct operation must be assured across defined pressure ranges.
    • Different requirements are outlined for electrical, pressure, and manually actuated valves, including opening/closing dynamics and force requirements.
  • Documentation and Marking
    • Installation, operation, and maintenance instructions are required for end users and testing authorities.
    • Technical data, design documents, and specific details (e.g., operating temperatures, hydraulic resistances) must be supplied.
    • Clear and permanent marking is essential for all valves, including manufacturer, model, working pressure, and nominal size.
  • Testing Facilities
    • Test facilities should demonstrate compliance with quality management systems, such as EN ISO/IEC 17025, and have the equipment and expertise to conduct appropriate tests.

Applications

Deluge valves in water mist systems play a pivotal role in modern fire protection engineering for a variety of facilities, including:

  • Critical infrastructure such as data centers and power plants
  • Industrial facilities requiring rapid fire suppression
  • Cultural heritage or archives where water damage must be minimized
  • Marine, offshore, and transport fire suppression systems

By setting out uniform requirements and test methods, prEN 17450-4 strengthens the reliability and safety of water mist firefighting systems. This benefits designers, installers, manufacturers, and end-users by:

  • Enhancing product consistency and system compatibility
  • Providing clear guidelines for testing, installation, and ongoing maintenance
  • Assuring performance under real-world conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, and mechanical stress

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to fixed firefighting systems, prEN 17450-4 is part of a broader standard series:

  • EN 14972-1: Design, installation, inspection, and maintenance of water mist systems
  • EN 12259-9: Deluge valves for sprinkler and water spray systems
  • prEN 17450 (Parts 1-3, 5):
    • Part 1: Strainers and filters - characteristics and test methods
    • Part 2: Nozzles - characteristics and test methods
    • Part 3: Check valves - requirements and test methods
    • Part 5: Pressure switches and pressure sensors - requirements and test methods
  • EN ISO 9227: Corrosion testing (salt spray)
