Overview
EN ISO 4254-7:2017/FprA1:2024 is an amendment to the international safety standard for agricultural machinery, specifically addressing combine harvesters, forage harvesters, cotton harvesters, and sugar cane harvesters. This document updates the original ISO 4254-7:2017, focusing on enhanced safety requirements aimed at reducing risks associated with the operation and maintenance of these specialized harvesting machines. Developed under the auspices of ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 23/SC 7 and processed in parallel by CEN, the amendment reflects the latest consensus on safety practices for agricultural harvesting equipment.
Key Topics
Safety for Harvesting Machinery: The standard outlines safety principles essential to combine harvesters, forage harvesters, cotton harvesters, and sugar cane harvesters. It covers assembly, operation, and servicing to minimize hazards.
Control and Interlock Systems: It mandates that the infeed drive cannot be engaged before the cutterhead drive, preventing accidental activation and improving operator safety.
Rotating Functional Elements Protection:
- Automatic disengagement of rotating crop flow system elements (cutterhead, blower, processor) within 12 seconds if the operator leaves the driver's position.
- Visual warnings for operators when these elements remain engaged unintentionally.
- Requirements for interlocking guards and guarded access for maintenance to prevent exposure to moving parts.
Run-Down Time Limitations: The amendment stipulates a maximum 10-second run-down time for rotating elements after disengagement, or alternatively, the use of safety guards compliant with ISO 12100:2010 standards.
Operational Modes for Maintenance: Special operation modes allow engagement of rotating elements only under prescribed, deliberate conditions during servicing, with clear status displays to the operator.
Compliance with EU Machinery Directive: The amendment supports conformity with Directive 2006/42/EC, providing presumption of conformity with essential safety requirements for machinery in the European Union.
Applications
This standard is applied by manufacturers, designers, and operators of agricultural harvesting machinery to ensure the highest safety levels during machine operation, maintenance, and servicing:
Machine Manufacturers use these requirements to design and build compliant combine harvesters, forage harvesters, cotton harvesters, and sugar cane harvesters that meet global and European safety expectations.
Safety Engineers and Inspectors rely on the standard for evaluating machinery safety features, ensuring protective devices such as interlocking guards and operator warnings are effectively implemented.
Machine Operators benefit from clearer operational safety instructions, warning systems, and safeguards that reduce accident risks during normal working conditions and maintenance tasks.
Regulatory Bodies may reference this standard when assessing machinery safety compliance under national regulations and EU directives.
Related Standards
EN ISO 4254-7:2017/FprA1:2024 references several related ISO standards to maintain consistency and support comprehensive safety coverage:
