Overview

EN ISO 16137:2006/A1:2019 is an important amendment to the international standard ISO 16137:2006, focusing on industrial check valves made from thermoplastic materials. This amendment, approved by CEN in June 2019, updates key aspects of valve design, material specifications, testing procedures, and dimensional requirements to enhance reliability and compliance with European regulations. It applies primarily to thermoplastic check valves used in fluid transport systems, specifically covering nominal diameters (DN) from DN 8 up to DN 600 and pressure ratings including PN 6, PN 10, PN 16, PN 25, as well as Class 150 and Class 300.

The document plays a crucial role in harmonizing standards across European markets by supporting conformity with Directive 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive), ensuring safety, performance, and regulatory compliance of check valves in industrial settings.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Covers check valves constructed from materials such as ABS, PE, PP, PVC-C, PVC-U, and PVDF, suitable for diverse industrial fluid transport applications. The amendment broadens the declared size range and pressure classes manufacturers can specify to meet various operational demands.

  • Materials and Design Requirements
Specifies thermoplastic materials according to relevant ISO standards (ISO 15493, ISO 15494, ISO 10931) to ensure mechanical integrity and suitability for pressure applications. The design strength requirements are aligned with ISO 9393-2, mandating both pressure resistance and long-term reliability.

  • Dimensional and Installation Guidelines
Face-to-face valve dimensions are standardized based on EN 558 for flanged connections to guarantee interchangeability and ease of integration in piping systems. The amendment includes specific notes on flange adaptor compatibility to avoid obstruction of valve operation.

  • Testing and Quality Assurance
Comprehensive testing regimes are required, including material integrity tests per ISO 1167-1, seat and packing leaktightness verified against EN 12266-1 standards, and long-term behavior assessments of complete valves. These procedures ensure valves maintain pressure tightness and operational reliability over extended service life.

  • Relationship with EU Pressure Equipment Directive
The standard provides a voluntary pathway for manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with essential safety requirements of Directive 2014/68/EU. It includes an informative annex detailing the correspondence between standard clauses and directive requirements such as design load factors, strength proof tests, and traceability.

Applications

EN ISO 16137:2006/A1:2019 applies to industrial sectors requiring safe and reliable fluid control through thermoplastic check valves, including:

  • Water and wastewater treatment plants
  • Chemical and petrochemical processing industries
  • Food and beverage production lines
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • HVAC and building services
  • Agricultural irrigation systems

The standardized check valves help prevent reverse flow in piping networks, ensuring process safety, reducing contamination risks, and maintaining system efficiency. The thermoplastic construction offers corrosion resistance, lightweight handling, and cost-effective solutions for various fluid types and operating conditions.

Related Standards

This amendment references and updates several interconnected standards critical to valve manufacturing and testing, including:

  • ISO 15493 & ISO 15494 - Specifications for thermoplastic piping systems components
  • ISO 1167-1 - Resistance to internal pressure testing of thermoplastic pipes and valves
  • EN 558 - Dimensional standards for metal valves in flanged piping systems
  • EN 12266-1 - Pressure testing procedures and acceptance criteria for industrial valves
  • ISO 9393-2 - Material design strength for thermoplastic valves
  • ISO 898-1 - Mechanical properties of fasteners used in valve assembly
  • EU Directive 2014/68/EU - Pressure Equipment Directive establishing essential safety requirements

These standards collectively ensure that thermoplastic check valves meet rigorous safety and performance benchmarks demanded by industrial applications and regulatory frameworks.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
