Overview
FprEN 12608-1:2025 is a European draft standard developed by CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 249, addressing unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) profiles used in the fabrication of windows and doors. Specifically, it focuses on non-covered PVC-U profiles, defining classification systems, technical requirements, and test methods to ensure product quality, safety, and performance across European climates.
This standard replaces the previous EN 12608-1:2016+A1:2020, aligning with modern industry practices and updating material and testing provisions. It is essential for manufacturers, designers, specifiers, and technical personnel involved in the supply and selection of PVC-U profiles for fenestration systems.
Key Topics
Classification of Profiles: The standard provides detailed criteria for classifying PVC-U profiles based on climatic zone suitability (moderate or severe climate), resistance to artificial weathering, impact resistance, and external wall thickness.
- Climate zones: M (moderate) and S (severe), tailored to Europe’s regional weather conditions.
- Impact and weathering performance classes ensure appropriate selection for various environments.
Material Requirements: Materials for PVC-U profiles must comply with requirements on UV resistance, mechanical properties, and dimensional stability. Both virgin and recovered materials are addressed, supporting sustainability and recyclability.
Dimensional and Appearance Standards:
- Specifies tolerances for critical dimensions such as profile depth, width, wall thickness, and straightness.
- Mandates uniformity of visible surfaces, absence of surface defects, and controls on permissible color deviations.
Mechanical and Physical Testing:
- Methods for assessing impact resistance, heat reversion, weldability, and performance after thermal exposure.
- Testing takes into account real-use scenarios like artificial weathering and mechanical stress.
Traceability and Marking: Profiles must be traceable throughout production, with clear indications of material type, class, manufacturing details, and reference to the standard. This aids quality control and regulatory compliance.
Applications
FprEN 12608-1 is a pivotal reference for manufacturing and specifying PVC-U profiles in the following contexts:
- Windows and Doors Fabrication: Ensures that profiles used are fit for purpose, deliver consistent quality, and comply with European climate adaptability.
- Construction and Building Projects: Architects, builders, and contractors rely on compliant profiles for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
- Quality Control and Procurement: Enables manufacturers, suppliers, and customers to confirm product reliability, trace origin, and support warranty and service needs.
- Sustainable Building Initiatives: Encourages the use of recycled materials in the production of PVC-U profiles, supporting circular economy and environmental performance goals.
Related Standards
Several related European and international standards underpin the testing, terminology, and performance requirements within FprEN 12608-1:
- EN 477 - Resistance to impact by falling mass
- EN 478 - Appearance after exposure at elevated temperature
- EN 479 - Determination of heat reversion
- EN 513 - Resistance to artificial weathering
- EN 514 - Strength of welded corners and T-joints
- EN 17508 - Terminology for PVC-based materials
- EN ISO 178, EN ISO 179-1, EN ISO 306 - Mechanical and thermal property measurement methods
- EN ISO 8256 - Tensile-impact strength
- EN ISO/CIE 11664 series - Colorimetry and color measurement
Reference to these standards ensures harmonization and interoperability across products and testing procedures, reinforcing conformity and quality across the PVC-U profile supply chain.

4 Classifications
4.1 General
The selection of appropriate classes necessary to fulfil national requirements may be given in a national
foreword of EN 12608-1.
4.2 Classification of climatic zones
For the purposes of this document, geographical Europe is divided in two climatic zones M (moderate
climate) and S (severe climate) as defined in Table 1. These climatic zones do not cover climates outside
of geographical Europe.

Profiles which are designed to be used in a severe climate (S) may also be used in a moderate climate (M).

moderate climate (M) are not used in the severe climate (S).
4.3 Classification of material to the resistance to artificial weathering
For the resistance to artificial weathering, the material used for the surface of the profile shall be
classified according to Table 2. For calculation of the exposure time see Annex B.

variations in profile and window design for the various systems which are in use in Europe. It is not intended
to imply differences in profile quality or in the performance of windows provided that the relevant
performance requirements for both profiles and windows are met.

be fulfilled.
