Overview

CEN/TS 18116:2024 is a technical specification developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that provides comprehensive design for recycling guidelines specifically tailored for thermoplastics pipes and fittings. These components are widely used as construction products and for water supply in irrigation systems. The standard addresses critical aspects to enhance recyclability, focusing primarily on facilitating mechanical recycling while also offering benefits for chemical recycling processes.

Thermoplastics pipes and fittings, as defined in this document, contain over 50% thermoplastic materials by volume. The guidelines extend beyond pipes and fittings to cover related items such as manholes, inspection chambers, infiltration boxes, and valves within piping systems. This standard excludes flexible components like drip lines, cable management pipes, and packaging.

Key Topics

  • Material Selection
Focuses on choosing thermoplastic materials that optimize recyclability. Key recommendations include:

    • Preferably use a single type of thermoplastic material per product.
    • If multiple materials are necessary, select those compatible for combined recycling.
    • Design for easy separation of different materials if recycling together is not viable.
    • Avoid additives and substances that hinder the recycling process or contain hazardous components.
  • Hazardous Substances
Addresses the importance of complying with local regulations and avoiding substances of very high concern (SVHC), such as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic chemicals. The guidelines also highlight minimizing the use of legacy hazardous substances like lead or brominated flame retardants to prevent contamination in recyclates.

  • Marking and Labeling
Clear marking is essential for effective sorting and recycling. The standard recommends:

    • Indicating recyclability explicitly on products.
    • Marking materials using standardized symbols (EN ISO 1043 series, EN ISO 11469).
    • Employing innovative methods such as QR codes or digital material passports to improve traceability.
    • Ensuring markings remain legible throughout the product lifecycle, including at end of life.
  • Documentation
Guidance for handling waste generated during installation and end-of-life phases is emphasized. Installation guides should provide:

    • Instructions for collecting and recycling waste materials and cut-offs.
    • Recommendations to facilitate dismantling and collection of pipe systems for recycling.

Applications

The application of CEN/TS 18116:2024 supports sustainable development and circular economy objectives in the plastic piping sector by:

  • Encouraging manufacturers to design thermoplastics pipes and fittings with recyclability in mind, reducing environmental impact.
  • Enhancing efficiency in mechanical recycling operations by minimizing contamination and material incompatibility.
  • Supporting infrastructure systems for irrigation water supply and construction, ensuring long-term environmental compliance.
  • Informing supply chain stakeholders about responsible material selection, hazard avoidance, and clear product identification.
  • Strengthening the uptake of recycled thermoplastics in piping products by aligning with material and safety standards.

Related Standards

To maximize alignment, understanding, and implementation of CEN/TS 18116:2024, the following related standards and documents are essential references:

  • EN 14541-1: Plastics pipes and fittings - Utilisation of thermoplastics recyclates - Part 1: Vocabulary
  • EN 14541-2: Recommendations for relevant characteristics and guidance on drafting product standards related to thermoplastics recyclates.
  • EN ISO 1043 (all parts): Plastics - Symbols and abbreviated terms for polymer identification.
  • EN ISO 11469: Plastics - Generic identification and marking of plastics products.
  • EN ISO 14021:2016: Environmental labels and declarations - Self-declared environmental claims.
  • Regulatory frameworks such as CLP Regulation and guidance from ECHA’s Public Activities Coordination Tool (PACT) for chemical safety.

By integrating these documents, stakeholders can ensure full compliance with European regulations and optimize design practices for thermoplastics recycling in piping systems.
