Overview
EN 15037-4:2010/FprA1 is a European Standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that specifies requirements and basic performance criteria for expanded polystyrene (EPS) blocks used in beam-and-block floor systems. These EPS blocks are integrated with precast concrete beams compliant with EN 15037-1, for the construction of durable, efficient beam-and-block flooring structures. The standard addresses EPS blocks either entirely composed of EPS or combined with other materials such as plaster or wood wool, provided these additional materials do not exceed 50% of the block's mechanical resistance contribution.
This amendment (FprA1) focuses on clarifying requirements related to reaction to fire classification and the management of dangerous substances, ensuring that EPS blocks meet the necessary regulatory and safety standards across European markets. It also outlines conformity assessment procedures to facilitate CE marking.
Key Topics
- Material Composition: Defines EPS blocks either purely made of expanded polystyrene or combined with other materials if they comply with mechanical resistance limits.
- Performance Criteria: Covers mechanical resistance, dimensional stability, durability, and reaction to fire, essential for structural safety and longevity.
- Reaction to Fire: Requires manufacturers to declare Euroclass fire reaction performance in accordance with EN 13501-1, commonly observing EPS blocks classified as E or F. Ignitability testing follows EN ISO 11925-2 standards.
- Dangerous Substances: Addresses national regulations and verification requirements related to hazardous substances released by EPS blocks, with guidance on handling declarations when harmonized European methods are unavailable.
- Conformity Assessment: Specifies various systems (1, 2+, 3, 4) for attestation of conformity including factory production control, initial testing, continuous surveillance, and certification, enabling manufacturers to CE mark products accordingly.
- Harmonization: Aligns with relevant EU Directives and includes reference to Commission Decisions facilitating compliance across EU member states.
- Annexes and Testing Protocols: Provides detailed procedures for testing fire reaction and mechanical properties, with amendment updates refining normative references and clauses.
