Overview
EN 60335-1:2002/A12:2006 is a CENELEC amendment to the European safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances - Part 1: General requirements. Approved on 1 December 2005, this amendment (A12) updates test and construction requirements for insulation and safety verification. It was to be implemented at national level by 1 December 2006 (dop) and conflicting national standards withdrawn by 1 October 2007 (dow).
This document is relevant for manufacturers, test laboratories and compliance engineers working on appliance safety, particularly where reinforced insulation and its accessibility are concerned.
Key Topics and Requirements
Scope: Amendment A12 modifies EN 60335-1:2002 and focuses on additional requirements for assessing insulation and electric strength.
Thermal and electrical assessment: Adds requirement for an assessment of the thermal quality of insulating materials combined with an electric strength test (see clause 29.3.3 reference in the amendment).
Single-layer accessible reinforced insulation: Introduces a measurement requirement (29.3.Z1) and minimum thickness values when accessible reinforced insulation consists of a single layer.
Minimum thickness table (Table Z1): Specifies required minimum thickness for single-layer accessible reinforced insulation by rated voltage and overvoltage category:
Rated voltage V Overvoltage cat. I Overvoltage cat. II Overvoltage cat. III < 50 0.01 mm 0.04 mm 0.1 mm 50 ≤ 150 0.1 mm 0.3 mm 0.6 mm 150 ≤ 300 0.3 mm 0.6 mm 1.2 mm Notes: The amendment notes that creepage distance through a possible hole is not considered relevant for the single-layer case because it is only stressed when a second electrode (human body) is present.
Applications
- Appliance manufacturers updating product design to meet household electrical appliance safety requirements.
- Product safety engineers selecting insulating materials and verifying reinforced insulation thickness and thermal performance.
- Test laboratories performing electric strength and thermal assessments to demonstrate compliance with EN 60335-1 amendments.
- Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies referencing the amended standard for national implementation and harmonized safety rules.
Related Standards
- EN 60335-1:2002 (base standard, Part 1: General requirements) - this document is an amendment (A12) to that base standard.
- Documents issued by CENELEC and the Technical Committee TC 61 that govern appliance safety requirements and implementation timelines.
