Overview
EN 62504:2014/A1:2018 (IEC 62504:2014/A1:2018) is a CENELEC amendment that updates the terminology for general lighting - LED products and related equipment. Its primary purpose is to harmonize and clarify terms used across the LED lighting sector (lamps, modules, packages and related parts) so that manufacturers, test houses, regulators and specifiers share a common vocabulary.
Key Topics
- Scope and status
- Amendment A1 modifies EN 62504:2014 and is aligned with IEC 62504:2014/A1:2018.
- Issued by CENELEC (prepared by IEC TC 34 “Lamps and related equipment”).
- Core definitions revised
- LED lamp - defined as an electric lamp based on LED technology. Notes specify three integration classes: integrated (LEDi), semi‑integrated (LEDsi), and non‑integrated (LEDni). Clarifies that an LED lamp can include at least one LED module.
- LED module - defined as an LED light source having either at least one PCB cap or no cap, and incorporating at least one LED package. Notes define module types (LEDi module Type 1, LEDsi module Type 2, LEDni module Type 3) and that a module usually forms part of a lamp or luminaire. Also notes typical module contents (electrical, optical, mechanical, thermal parts, interfaces and controlgear).
- LED package - defined as a single electric component comprising principally at least one LED die. Notes explicitly state what the package does not include (control unit, cap, direct supply connection, active electronic controlgear) and list optional inclusions (optics, phosphors, interfaces, ESD components).
- Printed circuit board (PCB) cap - new terminological entry defining caps intended for use with PCBs (examples provided in the amendment).
- Clarifications and removals
- Some annex terms under consideration were removed or marked void as part of the amendment, streamlining the terminology set.
Applications
This amendment is practical for:
- Product designers and manufacturers - to use consistent names and classifications in datasheets and product families.
- Test labs and certification bodies - to ensure test reports and conformity assessments reference standardized terms.
- Regulators and standards writers - to harmonize regulatory text and procurement specifications.
- Procurement/specifiers and OEMs - to reduce ambiguity in tender documents and interoperability requirements.
Related Standards
- This document is an amendment to EN 62504:2014 and follows IEC 62504:2014/A1:2018. For full compliance work, users should consult the base edition and other IEC/CENELEC publications from IEC/TC 34 covering lamps, luminaires and test methods.
