Overview
FprEN IEC 63553:2026 defines the essential performance requirements for fully flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels used in general lighting applications. Developed by CLC and harmonized with IEC standards, this standard addresses the unique characteristics of flexible OLED panels, which can be twisted, bent, or shaped for innovative lighting designs. It provides comprehensive guidelines for both product performance and testing methods, ensuring consistency, safety, and reliability in the rapidly evolving field of flexible OLED technology.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: Applies to fully flexible OLED tiles and panels for general indoor lighting, specifically designed to be bent or shaped during the manufacturing of curved luminaires. The standard covers products powered by DC supplies up to 120V.
- Photometric and Electrical Characteristics: Specifies initial and maintained measurements for input power, luminous flux, luminous efficacy, chromaticity coordinates, color temperature, color rendering index (CRI), average luminance, luminance uniformity, and luminous intensity distribution in both flat and bent configurations.
- Testing Configurations:
- Flat (unbent) panel measurements
- Bent configurations as specified by manufacturers
- Environmental and Reliability Testing:
- High temperature and high humidity operation and storage tests
- Mechanical stress and durability assessments
- Marking and Information Requirements: Mandates manufacturers provide key parameters on datasheets or packaging, including performance metrics for both flat and bent states.
- Measurement Methods:
- Guidelines for accurate photometric measurement of curved panels, referencing use of goniophotometers and limitations of certain devices for bent configurations.
Applications
The standard is critical for professionals in lighting design, architectural illumination, and OLED panel manufacturing. Its requirements ensure:
- Quality Assurance: Uniform methods to verify the light output, power consumption, and color properties of flexible OLED panels, supporting consistent product performance across manufacturers and regions.
- Product Development: Guidance for R&D teams designing flexible luminaires, enabling safe experimentation with new shapes and configurations without compromising reliability or safety.
- Architectural and Creative Lighting: Facilitates the use of fully flexible OLED panels in innovative lighting projects, including curved surfaces, wavy installations, and twisted luminaires that demand verified long-term performance.
- Market Confidence: Helps manufacturers demonstrate compliance, streamlining access to regional and international markets by aligning with IEC and CENELEC requirements.
- End-User Satisfaction: Ensures that flexible OLED lighting provides stable, uniform, high-quality illumination throughout its lifespan, enhancing the user experience in residential, commercial, and public environments.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive compliance and interoperability, this standard must be used alongside other key standards in OLED and general lighting, such as:
- IEC 62504: General lighting - Terms and definitions for light emitting diode (LED) products.

45 FOR GENERAL LIGHTING – PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
47 FOREWORD
48 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national
49 electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co -operation on all
50 questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities ,
51 IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS)
52 and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC
53 National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental
54 and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with
55 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between
56 the two organizations.
57 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus
58 of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National
59 Committees.
60 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in
61 that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC
62 cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
63 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to
64 the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and
65 the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
66 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity assessment
67 services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by
68 independent certification bodies.
69 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
70 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and members of
71 its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or other damage of any
72 nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and expenses arising out of the publicatio n,
73 use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
74 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is indispensable
75 for the correct application of this publication.
76 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent rights.
77 IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
