Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems - Part 7-1: Generic interface and use of profiles for power drive systems - Interface definition

IEC 61800-7-1:2015 specifies a generic interface between power drive system(s) (PDS) and the application control program in a controller. The generic PDS interface is not specific to any particular communication network technology. Annexes of this part of IEC 61800 specify the mapping of the different drive profiles types onto the generic PDS interface. The functions specified in this part of IEC 61800 are not intended to ensure functional safety. This requires additional measures according to the relevant standards, agreements and laws. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) mapping of drive profile type 1 onto additional network technologies; b) minor updates in the subclauses for profile types 1, 2 and 4, in relation with corresponding changes in the dedicated IEC 61800-7-20x parts.

Overview

EN 61800-7-1:2016 (identical to IEC 61800-7-1:2015) defines a generic interface between adjustable speed electrical power drive systems (PDS) and the application control program in a controller. It is network-agnostic: the generic PDS interface is independent of any particular communication network. Annexes to the standard map specific drive profile types onto the generic interface so profiles can be implemented across different network technologies. Note: the functions in this part are not intended to ensure functional safety - additional measures and applicable safety standards are required.

Keywords: adjustable speed electrical power drive systems, generic PDS interface, IEC 61800-7-1, drive profiles, power drive systems profiles, industrial automation.

Key technical topics and requirements

  • Generic PDS interface definition: Describes architecture and logical structure for interfacing controllers with power drive systems.
  • Profile mapping: Annexes map multiple drive profile types (e.g., profile types 1–4) to the generic interface and to specific network technologies.
  • Functional elements (FEs): Specification of core elements such as:
    • Device identification FE
    • Device control FE
    • Communication FE
    • Basic drive FE
    • Optional application FEs
  • Application modes: Defines modes commonly used in drives - torque control, velocity control, and position control.
  • Use cases and engineering lifecycle: Covers engineering, operation/control, and runtime interactions between controller and PDS.
  • Network technology mappings: The edition includes extended mapping of profile type 1 to additional network technologies and minor updates for profile types 1, 2 and 4 to align with IEC 61800-7-20x documents.
  • Non-safety scope: Explicitly states that meeting the interface requirements does not substitute for safety standards or legal obligations.

Practical applications

This standard supports interoperability and consistent integration of variable-speed drives in industrial automation systems:

  • Motion control and servo systems for robotics and machine tools
  • Conveyors, cranes, hoists, and material handling
  • Pump, fan and HVAC variable-speed applications
  • OEM drive design and controller firmware development
  • Industrial network and device profile implementations (e.g., CANopen, CIP Motion mappings in annexes)

Who should use this standard

  • Drive manufacturers and firmware engineers implementing PDS interfaces
  • System integrators and automation engineers designing control architectures
  • PLC and motion-control programmers using standardized drive profiles
  • Industrial network vendors mapping profiles to fieldbus or Ethernet protocols
  • Test labs and compliance teams validating interoperability

Related standards

  • IEC 61800-7 series (parts 201–204 cover profile type specifications)
  • IEC 61131-3 (control programming), IEC 61158 (fieldbus), and network profiles such as CANopen / EN 50325-4 and CIP Motion referenced in annex mappings

This standard is essential for ensuring consistent, network-independent interfacing of power drive systems within modern industrial automation and motion-control environments.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
