IEC 60904-8-1:2017 gives guidance for the measurement of the spectral responsivity of multi-junction photovoltaic devices. It is principally intended for non-concentrating devices, but parts may be applicable also to concentrating multi-junction PV devices. The SR is required for analysis of measured current-voltage characteristics of multi-junction PV devices as described in IEC 60904-1-1.

1 Scope

This part of IEC 60904 gives guidance for the measurement of the spectral responsivity (SR)

of multi-junction photovoltaic devices. It is principally intended for non-concentrating devices,

but parts may be applicable also to concentrating multi-junction PV devices. The SR is

required for analysis of measured current-voltage characteristics of multi-junction PV devices

as described in IEC 60904-1-1.

The requirements for measurement of SR of single-junction PV devices are covered by

IEC 60904-8, whereas this document describes the additional requirements for the
measurement of SR of multi-junction PV devices. This document only considers the

measurement of SR of individual junction layers within a two-terminal multi-junction device.

This document may be applicable to PV devices designed for use under concentrated

irradiation if they are measured without the optics for concentration.

4 General considerations

The procedure for measurement of the Spectral Responsivity (SR) of single-junction PV

devices is described in detail in IEC 60904-8. The procedure for measurement of the SR of a

multi-junction PV device requires the same basic principles, but is more complex, in particular

with respect to requirements for bias light and bias voltage.

This document describes the additional considerations, requirements and procedures for the

measurement of the SR of multi-junction PV devices based on the measurement principles of

single-junction PV devices.

Therefore, the provisions in IEC 60904-8 are also valid for the measurement of multi-junction

PV devices except where explicitly amended by this document.

Multi-junction PV devices consist of two or more series-connected junctions, each of which

responds in a different wavelength band of light. For multi-junction PV devices which provide

separate connections to each junction, the measurement of individual junction SR is identical

to that for single-junction devices as described in IEC 60904-8 using the appropriate

connections.

The procedures in this document describe the measurement of the SR of two-terminal multi-

junction PV devices, i.e. devices which have two or more series-connected junctions with only

two external electrical connections. The measurement procedures allow the successive

measurement of the SR of each of these junctions by appropriately setting the measurement

conditions using the correct bias light (Clause 5) and bias voltage (Clause 6).
5 Bias light

The measurement of the SR of single-junction PV devices (IEC 60904-8) requires bias light of

unspecified spectral content. For multi-junction photovoltaic devices the measurement of the

SR of a particular junction requires that this junction is current limiting. This is achieved by

applying bias light to all other junctions in the multi-junctions device such that at all times

during the measurement each of them produces a photovoltaic current larger than the

photovoltaic current generated in the junction under test. The photovoltaic current in the

junction-under-test might be generated partly by the bias light to the other junctions in

addition to the monochromatic light used for the actual measurement of SR. The spatial non-

uniformity (as defined in IEC 60904-9) of the applied bias light over the active area of the

multi-junction device should be less than 10 %, corresponding
