Overview
EN 60335-2-16:2003/A2:2012 is a CENELEC-adopted amendment to the European safety standard for food waste disposers (household and similar electrical appliances). It modifies EN 60335-2-16:2003 to incorporate updated requirements from IEC 60335-2-16:2002/A2:2011, with publication and national implementation timelines set by CENELEC. The amendment focuses on mechanical hazards, access to moving parts, interlocked covers and the evaluation of programmable electronic circuits and software used in disposers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Protection against access to moving parts: Where access to moving parts through the inlet opening is not prevented by other means, any cover over the inlet must be interlocked so the appliance only runs when the cover is closed.
- Physical testing: Compliance is checked by inspection and by applying test probe 31 of IEC 61032 with a force of 50 N to the inlet opening. Moving parts must be at least 100 mm below the inlet top or be inaccessible to the probe.
- Interlocked electronic covers: If an interlock uses an electronic circuit, additional tests apply: the appliance must be supplied at rated voltage and subjected to relevant durability/fault tests (referenced as tests 19.11.4.1–19.11.4.7 and fault conditions a–g of 19.11.2). The cover must remain secure under a 50 N force during and after these tests.
- Software and programmable electronics (Annex R): Annex R requires evaluation of software controlling safety functions. Key points:
- Fault/error detection must occur before safety clauses (e.g., access protection) are impaired.
- Software and related safety hardware must initialize and terminate without compromising safety requirements.
- Programmable electronics must include measures addressing specified fault/error conditions; software must be evaluated per Annex R.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and product designers of food waste disposers - for safe design, protective interlocks, and software safety measures.
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessors - to perform required physical and electronic tests (probe tests, fault condition tests, software evaluation).
- Regulatory bodies and certification agencies - for national implementation and enforcement of safety requirements.
- Safety engineers and R&D teams - to incorporate Annex R software evaluation and to ensure compliance with mechanical hazard mitigation.
Related standards
- EN/IEC 60335-2-16 (base publication) - particular requirements for food waste disposers.
- IEC 61032 - referenced for test probe 31 and accessibility testing.
- Annex R (in EN 60335-2-16/A2) - normative requirements for software evaluation and programmable electronic circuits.
This standard is essential when designing, testing or certifying food waste disposers to meet European safety requirements and to ensure reliable protection against mechanical and electronic hazards.
