Overview

EN 62841-3-6:2014/A12:2022 is a European standard published by CLC that specifies the safety requirements for electric motor-operated transportable diamond drills equipped with a liquid system. As an amendment to the EN 62841-3-6:2014 baseline, this standard addresses hazards, hazardous situations, and events relevant to such tools, ensuring safe design and operation within the EU. EN 62841-3-6:2014/A12:2022 aligns with EU Directives, notably the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and supports market access and regulatory compliance for manufacturers.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
The standard covers all significant safety hazards related to the design and use of transportable electric diamond drills with liquid cooling systems. It provides industry-specific guidance to ensure that only compliant tools are placed on the market.

  • Liquid System Requirements
This amendment introduces clarifications on parameters and safety features for integrated liquid systems, which include handling risks associated with moisture and supply cords.

  • Electrical Safety
Updated requirements for the supply connection and external flexible cords, including changes to minimum cross-sectional areas for cords based on rated current, mitigate the risk of electrical incidents.

  • Conformance to EU Legislation The standard specifies the relationship with essential EU directives, notably the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. It supports meeting the core safety objectives for machinery sold within the European Economic Area.

  • International and European Harmonization The amendment updates references to related standards to ensure harmonization with the latest IEC and EN publications.

Applications

EN 62841-3-6:2014/A12:2022 is essential for organizations involved in the design, manufacturing, and marketing of:

  • Transportable diamond drilling machines used for construction, renovation, and infrastructure works
  • Equipment that utilizes a liquid system for cooling or dust suppression during drilling operations
  • Tools intended for both professional and industrial environments, including contractors, construction firms, and rental companies

Practical applications include:

  • Ensuring machines offer safe operation for users by minimizing risks such as electric shock, handling of liquids, and mechanical hazards
  • Helping manufacturers demonstrate compliance with the EU Machinery Directive, facilitating CE marking and market access across Europe
  • Supporting regulatory bodies and inspection services in verifying product safety

Related Standards

For holistic compliance and integration, consider the following related standards:

  • EN 62841-1:2015
General safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools and transportable tools

  • IEC 61008-1 (mod)
Residual current operated circuit-breakers without integral overcurrent protection - important for electrical safety in portable tools

  • Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
The principal European regulation for machinery safety, referenced throughout this standard

  • Relevant amendments and common modifications
Such as EN 62841-1:2015/AC:2015 and EN 62841-1:2015/A11:2022, which provide updates and clarifications to baseline safety requirements

Practical Value

Implementing EN 62841-3-6:2014/A12:2022 enhances the safety, reliability, and marketability of transportable diamond drills with liquid systems. This standard assures stakeholders-including manufacturers, importers, and regulators-that products meet stringent European safety criteria, enabling legal access to EU markets and protecting end users. Adherence to this standard is crucial for reducing workplace incidents, supporting product liability defenses, and sustaining business reputation.
