Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-34: Particular requirements for motor-compressors

This European Standard deals with the safety of sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic type) motor-compressors, their protection and control systems, if any, which are intended for use in equipment for household and similar purposes and which conform with the standards applicable to such equipment. It applies to motor-compressors tested separately, under the most severe conditions that may be expected to occur in normal use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase motor-compressors and 480 V for other motor-compressors

Overview

EN IEC 60335-2-34:2023/A11:2023 is a CENELEC European amendment to the safety standard for motor-compressors used in household and similar electrical appliances. It covers the safety of sealed (hermetic and semi‑hermetic) motor‑compressors and their protection/control systems when those compressors are tested separately under the most severe conditions expected in normal use. The standard applies where the rated voltage is ≤ 250 V for single‑phase motor‑compressors and ≤ 480 V for others. Amendment A11 updates scope, classification, abnormal‑operation requirements and annexes, and adds guidance on interactions with EU regulations.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope and exclusions: Clarifies applicability to household and similar equipment and excludes compressors designed exclusively for industrial use (e.g., EN 12693, EN 60034-1).
  • Classification: Strengthened language requiring that motor‑compressors “shall be classified,” aligning classification with safety obligations.
  • Abnormal operation: Adds requirements for handling potentially explosive atmospheres; where applicable, motor‑compressors shall comply with IEC 60079-1 and IEC 60079-15 (as modified by the amendment) for group IIA gases or the refrigerant used.
  • Components and protection: Addresses protective devices and control systems (thermal motor protectors and related component testing are mapped to specific subclauses).
  • Annex updates:
    • Annex ZAA (informative): Explains the relevance of the Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) for refrigerating systems, including volume/pressure limits and common refrigerant classifications.
    • Annex ZC (normative): Lists international and corresponding European normative references that are invoked by the standard.
  • Testing context: Applies to compressors tested separately under expected severe conditions; references ageing tests and motor protector requirements as covered in specific subclauses.

Practical Applications and Users

This standard is essential for:

  • Appliance and compressor manufacturers designing sealed hermetic and semi‑hermetic motor‑compressors for household equipment
  • Product safety and compliance engineers preparing CE marking and conformity documentation
  • Test laboratories performing safety and abnormal‑condition testing
  • Regulatory bodies and notified bodies assessing conformity with both electrical safety standards and overlapping EU directives (e.g., PED, Low Voltage Directive)
  • Designers selecting refrigerants and sizing pressure-containing components to determine whether PED applies

Practical uses include design validation, component selection (protectors, controls), risk assessment for refrigerants, and establishing test protocols for safety certification.

Related Standards

  • EN IEC 60335-1 (Part 1: General requirements)
  • IEC 60079-1 and IEC 60079-15 (explosive atmospheres)
  • EN 378-2 (refrigerating systems - design and documentation)
  • EN 12693 (positive displacement refrigerant compressors)
  • EN 60034-1 (rotating electrical machines)
