Overview
EN 60335-2-16:2003/A1:2008 is the CENELEC adoption of IEC 60335-2-16 amendment A1 (2008) that sets particular safety requirements for food waste disposers - a subset of household and similar electrical appliances. This amendment supplements EN 60335-2-16:2003 and clarifies how Part 1 (general appliance safety) and electromagnetic/abnormal operating conditions are to be treated. It was approved by CENELEC on 1 May 2008 (dop for national implementation: 2009-02-01; dow for conflicting national standards: 2013-05-01).
Keywords: EN 60335-2-16, IEC 60335-2-16, food waste disposers, appliance safety standard, CENELEC, Amendment A1 2008.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Particular requirements for the safe design and construction of food waste disposers used in households and similar environments.
- Relationship with Part 1: Where Part 2 (this standard) does not add specific requirements, the general requirements of IEC/EN 60335-1 apply.
- Abnormal situations and electromagnetic effects: The amendment explicitly covers foreseeable abnormal operating situations and how electromagnetic phenomena can affect safe operation.
- Protection of vulnerable users: Definitions and considerations include persons (including children) with reduced capabilities or lack of experience, and children playing with appliances.
- Thermal and surface considerations: Bibliography addition points to ISO 13732-1 (assessment of human response to hot surfaces), indicating attention to hot-surface risks in disposers.
- Harmonized/endorsement status: Adopted without modification by CENELEC; intended for national standardization across member bodies.
Applications
Who uses EN 60335-2-16:2003/A1:2008 and why:
- Manufacturers and product designers: to design food waste disposers that meet European safety expectations and to integrate Part 1 and Part 2 requirements into product design and documentation.
- Testing and certification bodies: to assess conformity of disposers with the particular safety requirements and to reference amendment provisions covering abnormal and electromagnetic conditions.
- Regulatory and compliance teams: to support CE marking, national approvals, and to align product declarations with harmonized standards.
- Safety engineers and risk assessors: to identify and mitigate hazards specific to grinding units, thermal surfaces and user interaction (including vulnerable users).
Related Standards
- EN/IEC 60335-1 (general safety for household electrical appliances) - applicable where Part 2 is silent.
- ISO 13732-1 (ergonomics - methods for assessing human response to hot surfaces) - added in the amendment bibliography.
- IEC 60335-2-16 (base international standard) - this document is amendment A1 to that publication.
This standard is essential for anyone involved in the design, testing or compliance of domestic food waste disposers and forms part of the IEC/CENELEC framework of household appliance safety standards.
