Overview

EN 61229:1995/A2:2002 specifies requirements for rigid protective covers designed for live working on alternating current (a.c.) installations. Developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC) and approved by CENELEC, this standard ensures the safety of personnel engaged in maintenance and operational activities where electrical hazards are present. Its amendment, A2:2002, aligns EN 61229 closely with the International Standard IEC 61229:1993/A2:2002, providing harmonized safety criteria for protective covers used in electrical environments.

Key Topics

  • Purpose of Rigid Protective Covers:
These covers are engineered to prevent electrical shock and accidental contact with live parts in a.c. power systems during live working operations.

  • Scope of Application:
The standard applies to all rigid covers used for live working, focusing specifically on installations with alternating current.

  • Marking and Identification Requirements:
Amendment A2 updates the marking guidelines to include:

    • The IEC-60417-5216 symbol (double triangle) indicating suitability for live working
    • The applicable IEC standard number
    • Manufacturer’s name or trademark
    • Classification and, where relevant, category
    • Date and month of manufacture
    • Space for inspection records
  • Reference to International Symbols:
Inclusion of graphical symbols from IEC 60417 to standardize labeling and ensure clear communication of safety features.

  • Normative Annex:
Annex ZA details the linkage between EN and international publications, enhancing consistency across EU member states.

Applications

Rigid protective covers play a critical role in electrical safety across various sectors:

  • Utility Maintenance and Live Line Operations:
Utility companies use these covers to insulate and protect workers conducting live maintenance on overhead lines and substations.

  • Industrial Electrical Systems:
Industries employing high-voltage a.c. installations rely on rigid covers during equipment servicing and upgrades to prevent accidental touches and arc flashes.

  • National Grid and Distribution Networks:
Operators use standard-compliant covers as part of their safe working practices, especially where de-energizing systems is impractical.

  • Training and Compliance:
Adherence to EN 61229:1995/A2:2002 is often required in training programs to demonstrate compliance with EU occupational health and safety guidelines.

Related Standards

EN 61229:1995/A2:2002 is part of a broader set of standards addressing electrical safety and live working, including:

  • IEC 61229:1993/A2:2002:
The international basis for the EN standard, covering similar requirements globally.

  • EN 50443:
Common rules for the use of tools and equipment for live working.

  • EN 61477:
Product standard requirements for live working tools, including those used alongside rigid protective covers.

  • IEC 60417:
Graphical symbols for use on equipment, ensuring a universal safety language in marking and labeling.

Conclusion

EN 61229:1995/A2:2002 delivers clear, harmonized guidelines for rigid protective covers, enhancing electrical safety in a.c. installations across Europe. By specifying rigorous identification, marking, and reference protocols, this standard supports safe live working practices, reduces risk, and promotes uniform compliance with both European and international safety requirements. Regular updates and alignment with IEC standards ensure ongoing relevance and reliability in electrical protective equipment selection and use.
