Overview

EN 60715:2017 (identical to IEC 60715:2017) is the international/harmonized standard that specifies dimensions and functional requirements for standardized mounting on rails used for mechanical support of low‑voltage switchgear, controlgear and accessories. This second edition replaces earlier versions (1981 and 1995 amendment) and is a horizontal standard (IEC Guide 108). Key updates include editorial alignment with ISO/IEC Directives and updated drawings and tolerancing; the electrical protective‑earthing function of rails is now dealt with in the relevant product standards.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Dimensional and functional requirements for compatible mounting of equipment on common rail types used in electrical panels and switchgear assemblies.
  • Standard rail types covered: Top‑hat (TH) rails and section rails including:
    • TH 15‑5,5; TH 35‑7,5; TH 35‑15; TH 75‑25
    • C‑section rails: C 20, C 30, C 40, C 50
    • G‑section rail: G 32
  • Dimensional specifications: Nominal profiles, critical dimensions and tolerances for interchangeability and snap‑on mounting of devices.
  • Functional requirements: Mechanical fit, mounting stability, and guidance for safe assembly of switchgear and accessories.
  • Annex A (normative): Detailed dimensions and tolerances for specific steel mounting rails.
  • Annex B (informative): Practical application guidance - assessment of rail deflection, permissible load capacities, assembly options (e.g., paired C‑section rails) and torque/load tables.
  • Compliance context: Recognized as a means to meet mechanical safety objectives of the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) where cited; reference to related standards (e.g., IEC 60947‑7‑2 for protective conductor terminal blocks).

Applications and users

EN 60715 is essential for:

  • Panel builders and switchboard manufacturers specifying rail types and layouts for low‑voltage equipment.
  • Controlgear and accessory manufacturers designing product housings, clips and mounting feet to ensure compatibility with DIN/DIN‑style rails.
  • Electrical designers and specifiers creating layouts for industrial control panels, motor control centers, distribution boards and automation cabinets.
  • Installers, maintenance engineers and certification bodies verifying correct mechanical mounting, load limits and regulatory conformity.

Practical benefits include guaranteed interchangeability, simplified panel assembly, predictable mechanical performance (deflection/load), and reduced design rework.

Related standards

  • IEC 60947‑7‑2 (protective conductor terminal blocks)
  • EU Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive) - EN 60715 can provide presumption of conformity for relevant mechanical safety objectives

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC

in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.

INTRODUCTION
This document is provided as a horizontal standard. It is necessary to define standardized
mounting on rails for mechanical support of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear, electrical
accessories, and similar devices.
The user wants them to be easy to fix, remove and rearrange.
Two methods are used for fixing a device on a rail:
– either directly by clipping on the rail (this method is particularly suitable for "top hat" rails
or "G" rails);
– or by means of a variety of accessories such as sliding nuts and hooked or T-headed bolts
(this method is particularly suitable for "C" rails).
In the case of "G" rails, the first of these methods has been mainly used for mounting terminal
blocks which snap in and out of position and are clamped in rows by adjustable end stops.
The rail can take the form of a standard section as an integral part of the enclosure.
Rails are also available of composite sections that combine, for example, "top hat" and "C"
section sizes thus accepting devices with various arrangements for mounting.
One or more rails can be used as necessary for fixing devices.
Since rail mounting can affect the performance of equipment, it can be advisable for
equipment manufacturers to give guidance in their literature on the suitability for this form of
mounting.

The EN 60715:2017 standard provides essential guidance on the dimensions for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear, specifically focusing on standardized mounting on rails for mechanical support of switchgear, controlgear, and accessories. This document is critical for manufacturers and installers in ensuring compatibility and interoperability among different equipment types, thereby enhancing safety and performance in electrical installations. One of the significant strengths of this standard is its comprehensive scope, which encompasses both dimensional and functional requirements necessary for the effective mounting of various components on rails. By establishing clear criteria, EN 60715:2017 aids in minimizing installation errors and facilitating easier maintenance, which is vital for ensuring the longevity and reliability of electrical systems. Additionally, the revision from the earlier editions, notably the shift from a 1981 publication to this updated version, highlights the standard’s relevance in the evolving landscape of electrical engineering. The inclusion of the electrical function of the rail for protective earthing, now guided by the relevant product standard, reflects current best practices and safety measures. This aspect of the standard addresses contemporary safety concerns, ensuring that installations comply with modern electrical safety regulations. Moreover, the editorial updates and alignment with the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2:2016, along with the modernization of drawings in compliance with ISO tolerancing and drawing standards, reinforce the document's credibility. This not only enhances clarity for users but also ensures that the standard meets international benchmarks. In summary, the EN 60715:2017 standard stands out due to its thorough scope, effective technical revisions, and adherence to international directives, making it a pivotal reference for the low-voltage switchgear and controlgear industry. Its emphasis on standardized mounting practices supports the overarching goals of safety and compatibility, reaffirming its significance in contemporary application.
