Overview
EN 60335-2-74:2003/A11:2018 is a European Standard developed by CENELEC (CLC) addressing the safety of portable electric immersion heaters. These appliances are primarily intended for household and similar uses, with rated voltages not exceeding 250 V. The standard also applies to immersion heaters used by laypersons in shops, light industry, and agricultural settings such as farms.
As part of the harmonized EN 60335 series, this particular standard defines essential requirements to ensure personal safety and minimize hazards associated with the use of portable immersion heaters.
Key Topics
- Safety Requirements: Specifies the particular safety measures needed for portable immersion heaters, supplementing the general requirements in EN 60335-1.
- Scope of Use: Covers domestic settings and similar environments, with additional reference to layman use in light industry, shops, and agricultural premises.
- User Groups: Recognizes appliance operation by individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, provided they have received adequate instruction or supervision.
- Marking and Instructions: Outlines the minimum requirements for labeling and user guidance to prevent misuse, especially by children or untrained individuals.
- Conformity with EU Directives: Supports compliance with the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), ensuring products meeting this standard are presumed to fulfill essential safety objectives.
- Hazard Prevention: Clarifies the foreseeable risks for all users, with particular notes regarding children and vulnerable persons.
Applications
EN 60335-2-74:2003/A11:2018 is essential for:
- Manufacturers: Ensures that portable immersion heaters placed on the European market comply with mandatory safety requirements, minimizing risks such as electric shock and fire.
- Importers and Distributors: Assists compliance with EU legislation, facilitating smooth market access for products featuring the correct CE marking.
- Testing Laboratories: Provides a reference framework for evaluating the safety of portable electric immersion heaters during certification processes.
- Retailers and End Users: Offers assurance that appliances meeting this standard have been verified for safe, effective usage in domestic and similar environments.
Practical examples include portable immersion heaters used to heat water in domestic kitchens, holiday accommodation, shops, or for agricultural purposes such as on farms.
Related Standards
The EN 60335-2-74 standard is closely linked to the broader family of household electrical appliance safety standards, most notably:
- EN 60335-1 - Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 1: General requirements
- EN 60335-2 Series - Particular requirements for other appliance categories
- Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive) - Harmonizes the laws relating to electrical equipment safety in the EU market
Additional related standards may cover aspects such as electromagnetic compatibility and specific appliance features. Compliance with EN 60335-2-74:2003/A11:2018 often provides a presumption of conformity within the scope of relevant EU directives and supports certification, CE marking, and wider market acceptance.
