Overview

EN 60619:1993/A2:2004 is a European standard amendment focused on electrically operated food preparation appliances and the methods for measuring their performance. Developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and aligned with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60619 standard, this document ensures consistent and reliable evaluation criteria for household kitchen appliances such as mixers, grinders, blenders, and other electrically powered food preparation devices.

This amendment (A2), approved in 2004, updates the original 1993 standard to reflect advancements in small household appliances and improve testing methodology to aid manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. The standard mandates specific performance measurement techniques that are critical for product development, quality control, and regulatory compliance within the European market.

Key Topics

  • Performance Measurement Methods: Defines standardized procedures to assess key functionalities such as power consumption, operational efficiency, and safety of electrically operated food preparation appliances.
  • Information to Point of Sale: Mandates the provision of detailed product information including:
    • Manufacturer and supplier details
    • Product dimensions (in millimeters)
    • Electrical supply specifications
    • Cord length (in meters)
    • Weight (in kilograms)
    • Available functions and accessories
    • Operating noise level
  • Compliance & Harmonization: Ensures all CENELEC member countries adopt consistent requirements, facilitating product approval and market accessibility across Europe.
  • Amendment Approval Process: Details the regulatory timeline for implementation, including the adoption date and the withdrawal of conflicting standards by 2007-09-01.

Applications

The EN 60619:1993/A2:2004 standard is essential for stakeholders involved in the design, manufacture, testing, and sale of electrically operated food preparation appliances. Applications include:

  • Manufacturers gain clarity on performance benchmarks and testing protocols to improve product quality and design innovation.
  • Testing Laboratories utilize the standardized measurement methods to ensure appliance safety, operational reliability, and compliance with European directives.
  • Retailers and Distributors rely on the standardized product information to assist consumers in informed decision-making at the point of sale.
  • Regulatory Bodies enforce consistent performance and safety standards, supporting consumer protection and fair competition within the European appliance market.
  • Consumers benefit from transparent information on appliance capabilities and safety, enhancing trust and satisfaction.

This standard supports the harmonization of food preparation appliance performance evaluation, contributing to improved energy efficiency, safety, and user experience.

Related Standards

EN 60619:1993/A2:2004 complements other European and international standards related to household electrical appliances and product safety, including:

  • IEC 60619 - The international counterpart providing foundational testing methods for electrically operated food preparation appliances.
  • EN 60335 Series - Standards covering safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances.
  • EN 55014 - Electromagnetic compatibility standards for domestic appliances.
  • ISO 22000 - While broader in scope, relevant to food safety management systems and indirectly linked to appliance performance ensuring hygienic food processing.

By integrating these complementary standards, manufacturers and stakeholders can comprehensively address performance, safety, and regulatory compliance for electrically operated kitchen appliances across multiple markets.
