Overview

EN 60335-2-9:2003/A12:2007 is a European safety standard focused on household and similar electrical appliances, specifically addressing the particular safety requirements for grills, toasters, and analogous portable cooking appliances. This amendment (A12) updates the original EN 60335-2-9:2003 standard, providing enhanced guidelines on testing, safety parameters, and temperature limitations to ensure appliance safety during normal usage. Approved by CENELEC in 2007, this standard applies across multiple European countries and supports harmonized safety practices in the electrotechnical sector.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
The standard covers grills, toasters, rotisseries, waffle irons, sandwich makers, raclette grills, and similar portable cooking devices. It focuses on ensuring user safety concerning electrical, mechanical, and thermal hazards during operation.

  • Safety Testing for Heating Components

    • Defines hot functional surfaces - those intentionally heated to perform the appliance's function.
    • Introduces specific temperature measurement methods using probes to assess surface heating, with detailed instructions on probe contact force and positioning.
    • Lists excluded surface areas from temperature rise measurements, such as edges near doors, vents, and certain appliance undersides.
  • Temperature Limits for Surfaces
Specifies maximum allowable temperature rises for various materials and surfaces on appliances:

    • Metal and painted metal surfaces: up to 85 K on top surfaces, 60 K on others
    • Vitreous-enamelled metal, glass, and ceramic: up to 95 K top surfaces, 65 K others
    • Plastics thicker than 0.3 mm: up to 105 K top surfaces, 80 K others
  • Equipment-Specific Testing Requirements

    • Ovens, rotary grills, and cookers must operate at rated power with all heating elements on during testing.
    • Contact grills and similar appliances require temperature rise testing with special consideration of hot functional surface boundaries.
    • Breadmakers have targeted temperature limits and exclusion zones near ventilation and lids.
  • Testing Tools and Procedures

    • Utilizes a specific probe (Figure Z101) designed for accurate thermal measurement on flat surfaces.
    • Defines measurement zones around handles, grips, and operational devices according to size and likelihood of user contact.
    • Includes diagrams (Figures Z102 and Z103) to clarify testing zones and excluded areas.

Applications

The EN 60335-2-9:2003/A12:2007 standard is critical for manufacturers, testing bodies, and compliance engineers involved with portable cooking electrical appliances. Applying this standard helps to:

  • Ensure user safety by controlling surface temperatures to prevent burns or injuries.
  • Guide product design to meet European safety requirements, avoiding hazardous heat exposure areas.
  • Facilitate market access throughout Europe by conforming to valid CENELEC regulations and national implementations.
  • Support testing laboratories in establishing reproducible and standardized thermal performance tests.
  • Assist in product certification and risk assessment processes for grills, toasters, and related cooking devices.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1 - General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances safety.
  • IEC 60584-1 - Thermocouples for temperature measurements, referenced for probe specifications.
  • EN 60335-2-6 - Particular requirements for stationary cooking ranges, hobs, ovens, and similar appliances (complementary for built-in units).
  • CENELEC Internal Regulations - Governing rules for implementation and national adoption of European standards.

By adhering to EN 60335-2-9:2003/A12:2007, manufacturers and stakeholders ensure that grills, toasters, and similar portable cooking appliances achieve stringent safety levels, minimizing risks related to electrical shock, fire, and thermal hazards-critical factors for consumer protection and regulatory compliance in the European market.
