Overview

EN 60335-2-15:2016/A12:2021 is a European standard that focuses on the safety requirements of household and similar electrical appliances specifically designed for heating liquids. This standard applies to appliances with a rated voltage up to 250 V, commonly used in domestic environments. Developed and maintained by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC), it serves as an amendment (A12) to the original EN 60335-2-15:2016, ensuring updated safety protocols, enhanced marking requirements, and compliance alignment with EU directives such as the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU).

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
This standard covers electrical appliances intended for heating liquids for household and similar uses, including appliances that may have more than one function. It ensures these appliances meet rigorous safety standards to prevent hazards such as electric shock, fire, and mechanical injury.

  • Safety Requirements
The document specifies particular safety factors relevant to appliances heating liquids, extending the general safety standards of EN 60335-1. It includes testing and marking requirements, instructions for safe use, and conditions around construction and performance.

  • Marking and Instructions
Compliance with marking provisions helps users identify safe operation methods and risks. Clause 7 of the standard covers instruction manuals and labeling, ensuring clear guidance on appliance use and safety precautions.

  • Compliance with EU Directives
The amendment supports conformity with the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) by addressing essential safety requirements set by the European Parliament. The standard offers a presumption of conformity when cited in official EU documents, facilitating market access across member states.

  • Amendments and Updates
EN 60335-2-15:2016/A12:2021 modifies earlier versions by introducing new provisions, deleting outdated annexes, and clarifying the relationship between general and specific parts of the standard family.

Applications

  • Household Appliances
This standard applies to electric kettles, water boilers, coffee makers with heating functions, and other kitchen appliances designed to heat liquids safely.

  • Small Kitchen Appliances
It extends to compact, domestic units rated within the 250 V voltage limit, ensuring small-scale appliances meet consistent safety criteria.

  • Product Development and Testing
Manufacturers use this standard during the design and evaluation phases to ensure products meet European safety guidelines, reducing liability and enhancing consumer confidence.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Compliance supports legal market placement in the EU and EFTA countries, enabling manufacturers and importers to declare conformity with applicable safety laws.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1
The general safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances. EN 60335-2-15 is applied alongside Part 1 to address issues specific to liquid heating appliances.

  • EN 60335-2 Series
Other parts cover particular appliance types, such as appliances for cooking, refrigeration, or cleaning, providing a comprehensive safety framework across different household appliance categories.

  • Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU)
This directive harmonizes electrical equipment safety requirements across the EU, with EN 60335-2-15:2016/A12 serving as one compliance benchmark.

  • Additional Amendments (A1, A2, A11, etc.)
The amendment A12 is part of ongoing revisions to keep the standard aligned with technological advances and regulatory expectations.

EN 60335-2-15:2016/A12:2021 is essential for manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and testing organizations involved in the domestic appliance sector, providing clear safety guidelines for electrical liquid heating appliances. By adhering to this standard, stakeholders ensure consumer protection, legal compliance, and product reliability within European markets.
