Capacitors and resistors for use in electronic equipment - Preferred dimensions of shaft ends, bushes and for the mounting of single-hole, bush-mounted, shaft-operated electronic components

IEC 60915:2006 contains preferred dimensions for shaft ends and bushes and for the mounting of single-hole, bush-mounted, shaft-operated variable capacitors, variable resistors and potentiometers. If other dimensions not listed in this standard have to be used, it is recommended to select them also from IEC 60390 and IEC 60620. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1987 and constitutes a minor revision, related to tables, figures and references. This bilingual version, published in 2008-07, corresponds to the English version. The contents of the corrigendum of December 2008 have been included in this copy.

Overview

IEC 60915:2006 - "Capacitors and resistors for use in electronic equipment – Preferred dimensions of shaft ends, bushes and for the mounting of single‑hole, bush‑mounted, shaft‑operated electronic components" - defines preferred mechanical dimensions for shaft ends, bushes and panel mounting of shaft‑operated variable capacitors, variable resistors and potentiometers. This second edition (2006, bilingual copy published 2008 with corrigendum included) provides standardized shaft dimensions, mounting cut‑outs, and related component interface details to improve interchangeability and panel design.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Shaft types and profiles: preferred dimensions for plain round, flatted, slotted and concentric shafts (see sections 3.1–3.4).
  • Mounting details: recommended single‑hole, bush‑mounted mounting geometry including anti‑rotation lugs, panel cut‑outs and minimum panel thickness (section 4).
  • Component interface parts: preferred dimensions and options for bushes, fixing (mounting) nuts and washers (flat, spring, internal tooth).
  • Tables and figures: the standard contains detailed tables and figures listing preferred sizes, tolerances, finish requirements and options for knobs (screwed/push‑on), lug angles and chamfer/radius recommendations.
  • Units and format: dimensions are given in millimetres; normative references to related IEC documents are required for full application.

Practical applications and users

IEC 60915 is practical for:

  • Component manufacturers (potentiometers, trimmers, variable capacitors/resistors) - to design shaft and bush geometry that matches common panels and knobs.
  • Panel and enclosure designers - to specify accurate panel cut‑outs and anti‑rotation features for single‑hole bush mounting.
  • Assembly and product engineers - to select compatible fixing nuts, washers and knob mounting types (screwed or push‑on).
  • Purchasing and quality teams - to verify mechanical interchangeability and reduce custom tooling or rework.

Benefits include improved mechanical compatibility, reduced design iterations, and easier sourcing of compliant parts for electronic equipment.

Related standards

  • IEC 60390 - Dimensions of spindle ends for manually operated electronic components (broader range of spindle options).
  • IEC 60620 - Dimensions for the mounting of single‑hole, bush‑mounted, spindle‑operated components.
IEC 60915 recommends selecting additional sizes from IEC 60390 and IEC 60620 when dimensions fall outside its preferred list.

Keywords: IEC 60915, shaft dimensions, bush‑mounted, potentiometer, variable resistor, variable capacitor, mounting dimensions, panel cut‑out, shaft ends, preferred dimensions.

CAPACITORS AND RESISTORS FOR USE IN ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT –
PREFERRED DIMENSIONS OF SHAFT ENDS, BUSHES AND
FOR THE MOUNTING OF SINGLE-HOLE, BUSH-MOUNTED,
SHAFT-OPERATED ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS

1 Scope and object
This International Standard is applicable to variable capacitors, potentiometers and variable
resistors for use in electronic equipment.
The dimensions given in this standard have been selected from IEC 60390 and IEC 60620
because the ranges of dimensions included in these standards were considered too large and
contained too many variants for capacitors and resistors for electronic equipment.
Consequently this standard contains preferred dimensions for shaft ends and bushes and for
the mounting of single-hole, bush-mounted, shaft-operated variable capacitors, variable
resistors and potentiometers. If other dimensions not listed in this standard have to be used, it
is recommended to select them also from the above-mentioned standards.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition
of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

IEC 60915:2006 is a standard that provides preferred dimensions for shaft ends, bushes, and the mounting of certain electronic components. These components include variable capacitors, variable resistors, and potentiometers. If dimensions not listed in this standard need to be used, it is recommended to select them from IEC 60390 and IEC 60620. This second edition of the standard replaces the first edition published in 1987 and includes minor revisions to tables, figures, and references. The published version in 2008-07 is bilingual and corresponds to the English version. The contents of the December 2008 corrigendum have also been included in this copy.
