General Information
Overview
IEC 62821-3:2015 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on halogen-free, low smoke, thermoplastic insulated and sheathed flexible electric cables (cords). This part of the IEC 62821 series specifically covers cables with rated voltages up to and including 300/500 V designed for connecting electrical appliances. The standard ensures that these cables exhibit low smoke emission and minimal release of corrosive gases during fire exposure, providing enhanced safety in residential, commercial, and industrial environments.
The cables covered by this standard include both circular and flat constructions, with special attention to operational reliability and fire safety. The maximum conductor operating temperature limit for these cables is 70 °C. This standard supports the implementation of safe and environmentally responsible electrical wiring solutions.
Key Topics
Scope and Definitions: IEC 62821-3 sets requirements for flexible cables insulated and sheathed with halogen-free thermoplastic compounds. It applies to light duty and ordinary duty flexible cables for appliance connections with rated voltages of up to 300/500 V.
Construction Requirements:
- Conductors: Must comply with Class 5 flexibility requirements (IEC 60228) for conductors.
- Cable Sizes: For circular cables, cross-sectional areas from 0.5 mm² to 0.75 mm² with 2-4 cores, and for flat cables, 0.5 mm² and 0.75 mm² with 2 cores.
- Insulation: Made from halogen-free, low smoke (LSHF/D) thermoplastic compounds adhering to IEC 62821-1.
- Sheath: Thermoplastic halogen-free sheath complying with LSHF/ST1 properties, ensuring low smoke and corrosion emissions.
- Assembly: Circular cables have twisted cores while flat cables use parallel cores; an optional halogen-free tape can be applied around the assembly.
Identification and Marking: Cables must bear clear markings such as "62821 IEC 101" for circular cables and "62821 IEC 101f" for flat cables, consistent with IEC 62821-1 labeling requirements.
Test Methods and Compliance:
- Smoke emission testing follows IEC 61034-2 to verify low smoke density.
- Corrosion and halogen absence are assessed per IEC 62821-1 guidelines.
- Mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties are verified via mandated procedures outlined in the standard’s annexes.
- Surface resistance and dimensional compliance are mandatory, with surfaces required to exceed a 10 Ω resistance minimum.
Applications
IEC 62821-3:2015 flexible cables have widespread use in:
- Electrical Appliances: Ideal for power cords and flexible connections used in domestic and office appliances where fire safety is paramount.
- Building Installations: Used where stringent low smoke and halogen-free cable properties are mandated by fire safety codes, reducing toxic gas emissions in case of fire.
- Commercial Equipment: Power cords for equipment requiring durable, flexible, fire-resistant wiring.
- Transport and Leisure Vehicles: Suitable for cable applications requiring halogen-free and low smoke properties for passenger safety.
The standard supports manufacturers, electrical contractors, and safety inspectors by providing clear guidelines on producing and selecting flexible cables that minimize health and safety hazards during fire incidents.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.

1 Scope
This part of IEC 62821 applies to flexible cables for connection to appliances, insulated and
sheathed with halogen-free thermoplastic compound and having low emission of smoke and
corrosive gases when exposed to fire.
NOTE For some types of flexible cables, the term "cord" is used.
Low emission of smoke is checked in accordance with IEC 61034-2. Low emission of
corrosive gases is checked as part of the check for absence of halogens (see Annex B of
IEC 62821-1:2015).
The cables are of rated voltages U /U up to and including 300/500 V.
Circular cables and flat cables are included.
The maximum conductor operating temperature for each of the cables in this standard is
70 °C.
IEC 62440 should be used as guidance on the safe use of cables in this standard.

The article discusses IEC 62821-3:2015, which is a standard for electric cables. It specifically focuses on flexible cables for connecting appliances. These cables are insulated and sheathed with a halogen-free thermoplastic compound. They also have a low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when exposed to fire. The cables are rated for voltages up to and including 300/500 V. This publication should be read alongside IEC 62821-1:2015.
