Overview

ISO 9692-4:2003, "Welding and allied processes - Recommendations for joint preparation - Part 4: Clad steels", provides guidance on joint preparation specifically for clad steels. It is part of the ISO 9692 series and gives recommended types of joint designs and dimensions to achieve sound welded joints where a parent metal is covered by a cladding layer. The standard is intended to be used alongside welding practice guidance (see EN 1011-5 / ISO TR 17671-5 for welding of clad steels).

Key topics

  • Scope and purpose
    • Recommendations for joint preparation for all types of weldable clad steels.
    • Applicable to common welding processes used on steels (refer to other parts of ISO 9692 for process-specific guidance).
  • Joint types and configurations
    • Four main categories are covered in detail (presented in Tables 1–4):
      • Clad steels welded from both sides
      • Clad steels welded from both sides with cladding removal
      • Clad steels welded from one side
      • Clad steels incorporating a backing, insert or cover strip
    • Tables specify recommended joint geometries and dimensional guidance (angles, root face, gaps, cladding removal width/depth).
  • Cladding management
    • Guidance on removing cladding where necessary (for example, to avoid dilution or to prepare a sound root).
    • Notes on protecting adjacent cladding from grinding particles during preparation.
  • Special material considerations
    • Flags cases where a deviation from the recommended preparations may be required - for example, clad steels with cladding of titanium, zirconium or their alloys because of risk of brittle phases.
  • Normative references
    • Direct cross-reference to EN 1011-5 (Welding - recommendations for welding of clad steels) for welding procedure details and additional recommendations.

Applications and users

Who benefits from ISO 9692-4:2003:

  • Welding engineers and fabricators developing joint designs for clad steel components
  • Welding procedure writers, inspectors and quality assurance personnel
  • Plant designers and structural engineers specifying welding details for clad pressure vessels, chemical plant equipment, pipelines and corrosion-resistant overlays
  • Standards bodies and training organizations

Practical value:

  • Ensures consistent, reproducible joint preparation to protect the integrity of cladding
  • Helps avoid welding defects, cladding contamination and brittle microstructures
  • Supports selection of appropriate backing, inserts or cladding removal techniques to suit fabrication needs

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9692-4 was prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in collaboration with
Technical Committee ISO/TC 44, Welding and allied processes, Subcommittee SC 7, Representation and
terms, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna
Agreement).
Throughout the text of this document, read ".this European Standard." to mean ".this International
Standard.".
ISO 9692 consists of the following parts, under the general title Welding and allied processes —
Recommendations for joint preparation:
— Part 1: Manual metal-arc welding, gas-shielded metal-arc welding, gas welding, TIG welding and beam
