Overview

ISO 9693:2026 - Dentistry - Compatibility testing for metal-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic systems is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard specifies the requirements and test methods necessary to assess thermomechanical compatibility between a veneering ceramic and a metallic or ceramic substructure material, specifically for use in dental restorations such as crowns and bridges. The standard focuses on combined systems and does not allow for the conformity claim of a single component material.

ISO 9693:2026 is critical for dental professionals and manufacturers who aim to ensure the clinical performance, durability, and safety of prosthodontic materials by validating the compatibility between ceramics and substrates under conditions similar to those encountered in the oral environment.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability

    • Applies to combined systems of veneering ceramics with either metallic or ceramic substructures used in fixed dental restorations.
    • Excludes testing or requirements for single, standalone materials.
  • Thermomechanical Compatibility

    • Specifies the need for agreement between the thermal expansion properties of ceramics and substructures to minimize failure risks.
    • Details test methods including linear thermal expansion and glass transition temperature measurements.
  • Mechanical Performance

    • Requires de-bonding or crack-initiation testing to verify the adhesive strength at the interface between ceramic and substrate.
    • Stipulates minimum strength values for metal-ceramic and zirconia-ceramic combinations.
  • Thermal Shock Resistance

    • Mandates thermocycling tests, subjecting materials to repeated cycles of heating and cooling, to simulate oral thermal variations and assess resistance to cracking.
  • Sampling and Test Reporting

    • Outlines sampling requirements, preparation of test specimens, and documentation needed for reproducibility and traceability.
    • Prescribes detailed reporting requirements, including material identification, test results, and test procedures.

Applications

ISO 9693:2026 provides practical value for various stakeholders in dentistry, including:

  • Dental Laboratories and Manufacturers

    • Assists in research, development, and quality assurance of dental restorative systems-ensuring formulas for ceramics and metal or ceramic substructures are compatible for long-term performance.
    • Aids compliance with international regulations, thereby facilitating access to global markets.
  • Regulatory Bodies and Testing Laboratories

    • Offers a harmonized framework for evaluating product claims related to metal-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic restorations, supporting regulatory submissions and verification.
  • Dental Professionals

    • Ensures that products conforming to ISO 9693:2026 have undergone standardized testing, reducing risks of restoration failure and improving patient safety.

Related Standards

Adherence to ISO 9693:2026 often requires consideration of related dental material standards, including:

  • ISO 6872:2024
Dentistry - Ceramic materials: Specifies requirements for ceramic materials used in dentistry, referenced for determining the suitability of veneering ceramics.

  • ISO 22674:2022
Dentistry - Metallic materials for fixed and removable restorations and appliances: Defines criteria for metallic substructure materials used in dental applications.

  • ISO 10993-1
Biological evaluation of medical devices: Addresses assessment of potential biological risks and biocompatibility of dental materials.

  • ISO 7405
Dentistry - Evaluation of biocompatibility of medical devices used in dentistry: Provides requirements for evaluating biocompatibility in the clinical context.

By following ISO 9693:2026, dental product developers and manufacturers contribute to safer, more effective, and internationally accepted dental restorative solutions. Proper compatibility testing minimizes clinical failures, ensuring restoration longevity, patient satisfaction, and compliance with the highest global standards.
