Laminate floor coverings - Determination of thickness swelling after partial immersion in water
ISO 24336:2005 specifies a test method for the determination of thickness swelling of laminate floor-covering elements after partial immersion in water. The testing is destructive and is mainly intended to evaluate the behaviour of the laminate floor-covering element in contact with water. Possible pre-attached soft backing material, sub-layers or any other material integrated at the underside of the floor-covering element are not included in the test and should therefore be removed before testing.

Overview
ISO 24336:2005 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a test method for determining the thickness swelling of laminate floor coverings after partial immersion in water. This standard evaluates how laminate flooring materials behave when exposed to moisture, specifically measuring the dimensional changes caused by water absorption. The test procedure is destructive and is primarily intended to assess the durability and water resistance of laminate flooring elements.
The standard excludes materials such as pre-attached soft backing, sub-layers, or other integrated materials on the underside of the laminate floor-covering element. These must be removed before testing to ensure accurate and consistent results.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
The test focuses on measuring thickness swelling of laminate floor coverings after partial immersion (50 mm deep) in water for 24 hours at 20 °C. It assesses the laminate's dimensional stability and water resistance, crucial properties for quality flooring.Sample Preparation
Four test specimens are cut from a laminate element, with two specimens in the length direction and two in the width direction. Special care is taken to cut specimens away from edges and joints. Any pre-attached materials, except backing layers defined in EN 13329, are removed prior to testing.Conditioning and Measurement
Specimens are stabilized under controlled conditions of 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5 % relative humidity until reaching constant mass. Initial thickness is measured using a micrometer with ± 0.05 mm accuracy at specific points. After 24 hours partial water immersion, final thickness values are recorded promptly to calculate swelling.Calculation of Thickness Swelling
Thickness swelling (%) is calculated using the formula:Thickness swelling (%) = [(t_fin - t_in) / t_in] × 100Where:
- t_in = initial thickness (mm)
- t_fin = final thickness after immersion (mm)
The average swelling from multiple measurement points is reported to the nearest 0.1 %.
Test Report Requirements
The report must include references to ISO 24336, lab details, sample information, climatic conditions, test dates, procedure deviations, and the final swelling percentage.
Applications
Quality Control in Laminate Flooring Manufacturing
ISO 24336:2005 provides manufacturers with a standardized method to evaluate laminate products for water resistance. It helps ensure products meet performance requirements before reaching the market.Material Selection and Product Development
Flooring material developers use this test to compare the water resilience of different laminate cores and surface finishes, guiding improvements in product formulations.Compliance and Certification
The standard supports compliance with building codes and flooring certifications where water resistance is critical, such as in residential and commercial interior spaces prone to moisture exposure.Performance Benchmarking
Flooring retailers and specifiers utilize thickness swelling data to recommend suitable laminate flooring types based on environmental conditions and user expectations.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

3 Principle
Samples of laminate floor-covering elements are partially immersed (50 mm) in water, at 20 °C, during 24 h.
The resulting thickness swelling is determined.
4 Sampling
4.1 Cutting the test specimens
Cut four test specimens, measuring (150 ± 1) mm × (50 ± 1) mm out of a laminate floor-covering element.
Take two samples in the direction parallel to one edge of the element, and two samples in the direction
perpendicular to this first direction. Divide the element virtually into two equal parts, along both directions of
the element. Take both sets of samples from each half of the element, in both directions. Take the samples, if
possible, at least 20 mm away from both edges of the element. If this is impossible for some of the samples,
the distance from the edge might be less than 20 mm, but in any case, the joint p

ISO 24336:2005 is a critical standard that provides a comprehensive test method aimed at determining the thickness swelling of laminate floor coverings after partial immersion in water. The scope of this standard clearly outlines its focus on evaluating how laminate floor-covering elements react to water exposure, a relevant concern for both manufacturers and consumers due to the common placement of these products in areas prone to moisture. One of the primary strengths of ISO 24336:2005 is its specificity. By detailing that the testing is destructive, it ensures that manufacturers are fully aware of the implications for the product being tested. This transparency is vital for quality assurance in laminate flooring products. Furthermore, the standard explicitly states that pre-attached soft backing materials and other integrated components should be removed prior to testing, which helps maintain consistency and accuracy in results. This focus on proper testing procedures reinforces the reliability of the data generated under this standard. The relevance of ISO 24336:2005 cannot be understated, especially in the context of increasing consumer awareness surrounding the durability and maintenance of laminate flooring. As laminate materials continue to gain popularity in residential and commercial spaces, understanding their performance under wet conditions is essential for end-users to make informed purchasing decisions. This standard serves not only as a guideline for manufacturers in the production of high-quality products but also ensures that consumers receive laminate flooring that meets rigorous performance criteria. Overall, ISO 24336:2005 stands out as a well-structured and pertinent standard for the laminate flooring industry, addressing a significant aspect of product integrity with its focus on thickness swelling due to water exposure. The careful consideration of test procedures and the clear delineation of scope enhance its effectiveness in promoting quality assurance in laminate floor coverings.
