(Main)Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety -- Part 2-78: Particular requirements for outdoor barbecues
- Abstract
Deals with the safety of electric outdoor barbecues for household and similar use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. This standard does not apply to barbecues for indoor use, appliances intended to burn charcoal or similar combustible fuels, appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes, appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapor or gas).

SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 60335-2-78:2003, published by SIST and CENELEC. It gives particular safety requirements for electric outdoor barbecues for household and similar use, with a rated voltage not more than 250 V. The document is meant to be used together with EN 60335-1, so it adapts the general household-appliance safety rules to this product type.
What does SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003 specify?
SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003 specifies safety requirements for electric outdoor barbecues within the stated voltage limit and use category. It is written as a Part 2 standard, so it supplements and modifies the corresponding clauses of EN 60335-1 rather than standing alone.
The scope excludes indoor barbecues, appliances intended to burn charcoal or other combustible fuels, appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes, and appliances for locations with special conditions such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres. In practice, that means the standard is for electric products used outdoors in normal household and similar environments.
The foreword explains how the document is organized and read:
- clauses, tables and figures numbered from 101 are additional to Part 1
- new notes are numbered from 101
- additional annexes use letters such as AA and BB
- items added to the IEC text are marked with the prefix Z
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| ZC | Normative references to international publications with their corresponding European publications |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003?
SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003 works by modifying EN 60335-1 for outdoor barbecues. If a subclause of Part 1 is not mentioned, it applies as far as is reasonable; where the text says “addition”, “modification” or “replacement”, the corresponding Part 1 text is to be adapted. For a designer or test engineer, that means the starting point is the general household-appliance standard, then the barbecue-specific differences are applied on top.
Product scope and limits
The standard applies only to electric outdoor barbecues for household and similar use, up to 250 V rated voltage. This matters because product classification decides whether this document is the right safety standard.
Excluded product types
It excludes indoor barbecues, charcoal-burning or other fuel-burning appliances, industrial-only appliances, and products for corrosive or explosive atmospheres. In practice, a manufacturer must check the intended use and the fuel or energy source before choosing this standard.
Relationship to EN 60335-1
EN 60335-2-78 is to be used with EN 60335-1, based on the 2002 edition of Part 1, and later amendments or revisions of Part 1 also have to be taken into account when they become applicable. This matters because conformity assessment depends on both the general rules and the barbecue-specific ones.
Additional numbering and editorial conventions
The foreword sets the numbering system for additional subclauses, tables, figures, notes and annexes. For users, this makes it easier to identify what is unique to this part and what comes from Part 1 or the IEC text.
Defined terms
Words in bold are defined in Clause 3, and when a definition concerns an adjective, the adjective and the related noun are both bold. This tells readers that the definitions in Clause 3 control the technical meaning used in the standard.
Normative environmental reference
Annex ZC links the standard to IEC 60068-2-52 and its European adoption EN 60068-2-52, which covers cyclic salt mist testing. For outdoor equipment, that reference is relevant when corrosion-related environmental testing is needed.
What terms does SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003 define?
- CENELEC - The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, which approved the European Standard.
- IEC - The International Electrotechnical Commission, whose text EN 60335-2-78:2003 adopts.
- EN 60335-1 - The general household-appliance safety standard that Part 2-78 is used with.
- dop - The latest date by which the EN has to be implemented nationally by publication or endorsement.
- dow - The date by which conflicting national standards have to be withdrawn.
- Annex ZC - The annex that lists normative references to international publications and their European counterparts.
Who uses SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003?
Manufacturers of electric outdoor barbecues use this standard when designing products for household and similar markets. Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies use it to plan safety testing and evaluate whether a product follows the correct Part 2 requirements.
Quality managers, compliance teams and buyers use it to confirm the intended product category, voltage limit and applicable safety basis. It is also relevant to importers and specifiers who need to distinguish outdoor electric barbecues from indoor units, fuel-burning appliances or industrial equipment.
What changed in SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003 replaces EN 60335-2-78:1997. The foreword also states that the European text was approved without modification from IEC 60335-2-78:2002.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003?
- EN 60335-1 - Provides the general safety requirements that this part modifies and supplements.
- IEC 60335-2-78:2002 - The international text adopted as the basis for this European Standard.
- IEC 60068-2-52 - Gives the salt mist cyclic test method referenced in Annex ZC.
- EN 60068-2-52 - The European publication corresponding to IEC 60068-2-52.
What does the SIST EN 60335-2-78:2003 document contain?
The document contains the European foreword, introduction and endorsement notice, followed by the part-specific safety framework for outdoor barbecues. It also explains the editorial rules for additions, modifications and replacements relative to EN 60335-1.
Annex ZC provides a normative reference table linking international publications to European publications. The introduction also places the standard in the context of the Low Voltage Directive and notes the relationship with the Machinery Directive for products with mechanical moving parts.
