Ergonomics of the thermal environment - Principles and application of relevant International Standards (ISO 11399:1995)

Purpose is to specify information which will allow the correct, effective and practical use of International Standards concerned with the ergonomics of the thermal environment. Describes the underlying principles concerning the ergonomics of the thermal environment.

Overview

EN ISO 11399:2000 - "Ergonomics of the thermal environment - Principles and application of relevant International Standards (ISO 11399:1995)" provides guidance on the correct, effective and practical use of International Standards related to the ergonomics of thermal environments. Its purpose is to describe the underlying principles that inform how thermal conditions affect human well‑being, performance and safety, and to help practitioners apply the suite of related ISO standards consistently.

Key Topics

This standard focuses on high‑level principles and application guidance rather than prescriptive limits. Key technical topics include:

  • Principles of thermal ergonomics - conceptual framework for how environmental factors interact with human physiology and perception.
  • Application of related ISO standards - guidance on selecting and using complementary standards that address measurement, evaluation and control of thermal conditions.
  • Measurement and interpretation - practical advice on measuring environmental variables and interpreting results in ergonomic terms.
  • Human factors affecting thermal response - consideration of clothing, metabolic rate (activity), individual variability and acclimatization.
  • Risk context and use cases - how to apply standards across different settings (workplaces, buildings, outdoor activities).
  • Practical implementation - best practices for integrating standards into design, risk assessment and compliance work.

Applications

EN ISO 11399:2000 is a reference for professionals who need to interpret and apply thermal‑ergonomics standards in real situations. Typical uses include:

  • Informing workplace thermal risk assessments and guidance for managing heat and cold exposure.
  • Supporting HVAC and building design decisions to optimize thermal comfort and occupant performance.
  • Guiding occupational health and safety policies, training and procedures.
  • Helping product and equipment designers consider thermal ergonomics in user interfaces and enclosures.
  • Assisting researchers and consultants with consistent application of international measurement and evaluation methods.

Who Uses It

  • Ergonomists and human factors specialists
  • Occupational hygienists and safety managers
  • HVAC and building services engineers
  • Industrial designers and product developers
  • Regulatory bodies and standards committees

Related Standards

This standard is intended to be read alongside the body of ISO standards that address thermal environment measurement, assessment methods and specific guidance for heat/cold stress and thermal comfort. EN ISO 11399:2000 helps users identify and apply those related documents consistently.
