Respiratory protective devices - Self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with full face mask - Requirements, testing, marking
This European Standard specifies minimum performance requirements for self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with full face mask used as respiratory protective devices, except escape apparatus and diving apparatus.
Such equipment is intended for use in work situations where the risk on over pressurisation of the pressure vessels with their valves due to hot environmental conditions is low.
Laboratory and practical performance tests are included for the assessment of compliance with the requirements.

Overview
EN 137:2006 is the CEN European Standard for respiratory protective devices - specifically self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with full face mask. Published in 2006, it sets minimum requirements, testing and marking rules for such apparatus (excluding escape apparatus and diving apparatus). The standard covers complete laboratory and practical performance tests to assess compliance and is intended for work situations where the risk of pressure vessel over‑pressurisation from hot environmental conditions is low.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope & Classification
- Applies to self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus with full face mask.
- Two types: Type 1 - industrial use, Type 2 - firefighting.
- Escape and diving apparatus are excluded.
- Components & Description
- Typical components: valved pressure vessel(s), body harness, lung‑governed demand valve, pressure indicator(s), warning device(s), connecting hoses/tubes, full face mask.
- May include pressure reducer, supplementary air supply, second medium pressure connector, ambient air bypass device.
- Design & Ergonomics
- Apparatus must be robust, free of sharp edges/protrusions, and allow inspection and adjustment without accidental change.
- Diameter of pressurised parts >0.5 bar downstream of shut‑off valves shall not exceed 32 mm.
- Wearer must be able to remove harness and still breathe from the apparatus while wearing the full face mask.
- Performance & Safety Tests
- Laboratory and practical performance tests per EN 13274 series (breathing resistance, flame, climatic conditions, practical performance).
- Specific tests include pressure reducer performance, warning device functionality, leak‑tightness, water immersion, hose collapse resistance, static/dynamic pressure (for threaded connectors), and exhalation valve checks.
- Marking & Manufacturer Information
- Requirements for marking, and for information supplied (inspection, maintenance, safe use) are specified.
Applications and Users
- Practical applications
- Industrial environments, confined spaces, and firefighting scenarios where compressed air SCBA with full face mask are required and over‑pressurisation risk due to heat is low.
- Who uses EN 137:2006
- Manufacturers and product designers of SCBA
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Health & safety officers, procurement teams, and fire service equipment managers
- Regulators implementing PPE directives across CEN member states
