Abstract

This European Standard specifies the classification, chemical composition, marking and other requirements for primary zinc. The grades of zinc included in the standard are those which are traded internationally. The standard does not include requirements for secondary zinc produced by remelting.

SIST EN 1179:2004 is the Slovenian standard for primary zinc, identical to EN 1179:2003. It specifies how primary zinc is classified, what chemical composition each grade must meet, and how ingots are marked, sampled and documented. In practice, it is used by producers, suppliers, purchasers and inspectors who need a common basis for ordering and checking traded primary zinc.

What does SIST EN 1179:2004 specify?

SIST EN 1179:2004 covers primary zinc grades traded internationally. It applies to zinc supplied as ingots and excludes secondary zinc made by remelting. The document is organized into clauses 1 to 9, with the core product requirements in clause 6 and the grade table in Table 1.

Clause 1 states the scope, clause 2 lists the referenced test and sampling standards, and clause 3 defines the terms used throughout the document. Clauses 4 to 9 then cover manufacture, ordering information, requirements, sampling and analysis, marking and labelling, and inspection documents.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 1179:2004?

Clause 4 requires zinc ingots to be manufactured by casting from liquid primary zinc. For the user, this means the standard is aimed at cast ingots, not at remelted secondary metal.

Clause 5 tells the buyer what to specify in the order: the standard number, the required grade, the total mass, the nominal mass per ingot, any required ingot shape, and whether a certificate of analysis or a declaration of conformity is needed. This matters because the purchase order becomes the control point for grade, form and documentation.

Clause 6.1 links each grade to Table 1. Table 1 defines five grades - Z1 White, Z2 Yellow, Z3 Green, Z4 Blue and Z5 Black - and sets the chemical composition limits for zinc and the named impurities lead, cadmium, iron, tin, copper and aluminium. The clause also requires reported analysis results to be rounded to the same number of decimal places as the stated limit, using standard rounding rules.

Clause 6.2 leaves the ingot shape to the supplier unless the buyer and supplier agree a specific shape in the enquiry and order. In practice, shape only becomes a contractual requirement when it is stated up front.

Clause 6.3 says the surface condition of the ingots must not affect the chemistry requirements or be harmful to the intended end use. That means visible surface condition is judged by its effect on performance and compliance, not by appearance alone.

Clause 7 requires sampling for conformity checking to follow EN 12060. For disputes, the chemical composition in Table 1 is determined by wet chemical methods from EN 12441-3, EN 12441-5 and EN 12441-6 unless another method has been agreed. The note also recommends EN 12019 for production control and end-product certification by optical emission spectrometry.

Clauses 8 and 9 deal with identification and paperwork. Ingots or bundles must be marked or labelled with the producer’s mark, the grade or colour code, the batch or cast reference, and the mass. If the purchaser asks for it, the supplier must provide either a certificate of analysis or a declaration of conformity with the consignment.

What terms does SIST EN 1179:2004 define?

  • Ingot - a cast product intended for remelting.
  • Primary zinc - zinc obtained from ore or other zinc-bearing material by distillation or by chemical or electrolytic reduction.
  • Cast - for non-continuous casting, the product of one furnace or crucible melt; for continuous casting, an identified volume of liquid metal.
  • Batch - a number of ingots taken from a single cast.
  • Bundle - a set of ingots from one cast secured for handling, shipment and storage.
  • Jumbo - a large ingot not suitable for manual handling, weighing at least 30 kg.

Who uses SIST EN 1179:2004?

SIST EN 1179:2004 is used by zinc producers, suppliers, buyers, laboratories and inspectors. It supports product specification, incoming inspection, sampling, chemical analysis, marking and shipment documentation for primary zinc ingots.

What changed in SIST EN 1179:2004 from the previous edition?

The Slovenian publication identifies SIST EN 1179:2004 as replacing SIST EN 1179:1998. The foreword says this edition supersedes EN 1179:1995.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 1179:2004?

  • EN 12060 - provides the sampling method used to verify conformity with the chemical composition requirements.
  • EN 12441-3 - gives the flame atomic absorption spectrometric method for lead, cadmium and copper.
  • EN 12441-5 - gives the spectrophotometric method for iron in primary zinc.
  • EN 12441-6 - gives the flame atomic absorption spectrometric method for aluminium and iron.
  • EN 12019 - is noted as the recommended optical emission spectrometry method for production control and end-product certification.

What does the SIST EN 1179:2004 document contain?

The document contains a grade table for primary zinc, including the Z1 to Z5 classification, colour codes and impurity limits. It also includes the ordering information the purchaser should give, the sampling and dispute-analysis approach, and the minimum marking and labelling content for ingots or bundles.

Clause 6 includes the composition table and a rounding rule for reported analysis results. Clause 9 includes the content expected in inspection documents, including the wording for a declaration of conformity.
