SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 is a CENELEC European Standard for low voltage energy cables with thermoplastic PVC insulation and PVC sheath used as extensible leads. It specifies cable construction, marking, dimensions and test requirements for leads intended to connect domestic appliances to the fixed supply.

What does SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 specify?

SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 specifies thermoplastic (PVC) insulated and PVC sheathed extensible leads with rated voltages up to and including 300/500 V. It covers circular and flat cables for domestic appliance connections and states a maximum conductor operating temperature of 70 °C.

The document is organized around general scope material, normative references, terms from EN 50525-1, two cable families in Clause 4, and normative annexes A to F. It should be read together with EN 50525-1, which provides the general requirements for this cable series.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex APost-coiling marking and origin identification
Annex BPre-coiling tests
Annex CPost-coiling tests
Annex DGeneral data and dimensions
Annex ECompatibility test requirements
Annex FMechanical test requirements

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011?

SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 sets out two product groups: light duty cables H03VVH8-F and H03VVH2H8-F, and ordinary duty cables H05VVH8-F and H05VVH2H8-F. In practice, this means the purchaser or manufacturer must choose the cable type, construction and test route that match the intended duty level and shape.

Cable construction

For both groups, the conductor is class 5 to EN 60228, which points to flexible conductors suitable for repeated movement. The insulation is PVC compound Type TI 2 and the sheath is PVC compound Type TM 2, so the material choice is fixed rather than left to the supplier.

The cable sizes differ by family. Light duty circular cables use 0,5 mm2 and 0,75 mm2 in 2 or 3 cores, while light duty flat cables use the same sizes in 2 cores only. Ordinary duty cables use larger cross-sectional areas, and the flat version is limited to 2 cores.

Assembly and marking

Circular cables are assembled with twisted cores, while flat cables have parallel cores. For circular ordinary duty cables with two cores, the space between the cores is filled either by separate fillers or by sheath filling. The marking code must match the cable type, and Clause 6 of EN 50525-1 controls the marking format.

After coiling, the cable must form a helical lead and substantially keep that shape in use. If the lead is made by a producer different from the pre-coiled cable producer, Annex A requires an additional origin mark. That matters because extensible leads often pass through more than one manufacturing step, and traceability has to remain clear.

Testing and performance

The standard splits verification into pre-coiling and post-coiling stages. Annex B lists the pre-coiling electrical, dimensional, material and low-temperature impact tests, and Annex C lists the post-coiling electrical, dimensional, mechanical and fire-related tests. This lets a manufacturer check the cable before it is formed into the extensible lead and again after forming.

Annex E gives the compatibility test after ageing at 80 °C for seven days, with tensile strength and elongation retention criteria for insulation and sheath materials. Annex F gives the extension test and endurance test for extensible leads. The endurance test requires 30 000 backward and forward movements without current interruption or conductor short circuit, then a voltage withstand test.

Dimensional data

Annex D provides the general data tables for pre-coiled overall dimensions, minimum insulation resistance at 70 °C, and post-coiling insulation and sheath thicknesses. For a buyer or quality manager, this is the part used to check whether a cable size matches the intended product design and test limits.

What terms does SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 define?

  • Extensible lead - A cable formed into a helical lead that is intended to retain its coiled shape during use.
  • H03VVH8-F - The CENELEC code for a light duty circular extensible lead.
  • H03VVH2H8-F - The CENELEC code for a light duty flat extensible lead.
  • H05VVH8-F - The CENELEC code for an ordinary duty circular extensible lead.
  • H05VVH2H8-F - The CENELEC code for an ordinary duty flat extensible lead.
  • Class 5 - The flexible conductor class required by EN 60228.
  • TI 2 - The PVC insulation compound type used in this standard.
  • TM 2 - The PVC sheath compound type used in this standard.

Who uses SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011?

SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 is used by cable manufacturers, assemblers of extensible leads, and test laboratories that verify electrical, dimensional and mechanical performance. It is also relevant to appliance makers, buyers and quality managers who need to specify a flexible lead for domestic appliances and confirm that the cable type, marking and test route match the intended application.

What changed in SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 supersedes HD 21.10 S2:2001.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011?

  • EN 50525-1 - Provides the general requirements for low voltage energy cables in this series, including the marking clause referenced in Clause 4.
  • EN 50363-3 - Specifies the PVC insulating compounds, including Type TI 2.
  • EN 50363-4-1 - Specifies the PVC sheathing compounds, including Type TM 2.
  • EN 50395 - Gives the electrical test methods used for conductor resistance, voltage tests and insulation resistance.
  • EN 50396 - Gives the non-electrical test methods used for dimensions, compatibility, extension, endurance and impact tests.
  • EN 60228 - Specifies conductor classes for insulated cables, including class 5.
  • EN 60811-1-2 - Provides the thermal ageing method used for the compatibility test.
  • EN 60811-1-4 - Provides the low-temperature test method used for the impact test.

What does the SIST EN 50525-2-12:2011 document contain?

The document contains construction rules for two families of extensible leads, tables of cable sizes and dimensions, and the marking method for post-coiling origin identification. It also contains pre-coiling and post-coiling test tables, including electrical tests, dimensional checks, material tests, a compatibility test, extension and endurance tests, and a fire-related test.

Annex D is the main place for dimensional data, while Annex E and Annex F provide the acceptance criteria for ageing-related material performance and mechanical durability. For engineering and quality control, these annexes are the parts used to set up product verification, incoming checks and type testing.
