Ships and marine technology - Small weathertight steel hatches (ISO 5778:1998)
This International Standard specifies the main dimensions, location and number of fittings, materials and quality of manufacture for small weathertight steel hatches for application on board ships in order to ensure interchangeability of the hatches. The remaining dimensions are left to the manufacturer. The hatches are suitable for loading operations and for giving access to storage compartments and dry cargo holds.
The hatches are not suitable as an access to any kind of tanks and shall not be used as escape hatches.
These hatches generally conform to the requirements of the International Convention on Load Lines 1966 (LLC66). The possibility for application in position 1 and position 2 has to be considered for each situation and, where necessary, the hatch covers shall be provided with additional stiffening.
NOTE — Users of this International Standard should note that while observing the requirements of this standard, they should, at the same time, ensure compliance with such statutory requirements, rules and regulations as may be applicable to the individual ship concerned.

General Information
Overview
EN ISO 5778:2000 (ISO 5778:1998) covers design, dimensions, materials and manufacture of small weathertight steel hatches for ships and marine technology. The standard establishes main dimensions, location and number of fittings, sealing details and quality requirements to ensure interchangeability and reliable weathertightness for hatches used for loading operations and access to storage compartments and dry cargo holds. It explicitly excludes use as tank access or escape hatches and notes conformity with statutory rules such as the International Convention on Load Lines (LLC66).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Nominal sizes: Standard nominal inside coaming dimensions include 630×630, 630×830, 830×630, 830×830, 1030×1030 and 1330×1330 mm.
- Coaming and cover geometry: Upper coaming dimensions are defined relative to nominal sizes; cover plate sizes are slightly larger (e.g. 674×674 mm for a 630×630 nominal hatch). Edges should be rounded or chamfered to protect seals.
- Hatch seal: Resilient seal cross-section is 45×20 mm. Initial compression allowance is 2 mm; a depth stop must prevent compression exceeding 4 mm. Seal must be bonded and retained by a bar.
- Fittings: Two hinges per hatch with oval holes to permit seal compression; closing devices use toggle bolts with wing nuts sized for one-man tightening (threads per ISO 262). Provision for securing open covers and counterbalance weights is recommended.
- Materials and strength: Coamings, covers and primary fittings: weldable steel with minimum tensile strength 340 N/mm² (shipbuilding quality). Toggle bolts: corrosion-resistant with minimum 350 N/mm². Seal material must resist marine conditions and retain sealing/resealing performance.
- Manufacture and finish: Components must be free from distortion and exposed rough edges; surfaces treated (blast-cleaned or equivalent) and primed to inhibit corrosion.
- Weathertightness testing: Installed hatches must pass a hose test or equivalent to the satisfaction of the regulatory authority.
- Load Lines and stiffening: Generally conforms with LLC66; for application in certain positions (position 1 and 2) additional stiffening of covers may be required (Regulation 16(2) LLC66).
Applications and users
- Practical uses: loading operations, access to storage compartments and dry cargo holds on merchant and work vessels.
- Primary users: shipbuilders, naval architects, hatch manufacturers, shipyards, marine equipment suppliers, classification societies and regulatory inspectors responsible for compliance and installation.
- Benefits: ensures interchangeability, predictable sealing performance, and clearer procurement/specification language for marine hatch components.

The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technicalcommittees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established hasthe right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, inliaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International ElectrotechnicalCommission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.International Standard ISO 5778 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Ships and marine technology,Subcommittee SC 8, Structures. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 5778:1979), of which it constitutes a technical revision.AmendmentsThe following amendments have been made to the first edition (1979-12-15).a) The nominal size 830 × 630 has been added.b) The inclined and vertical position of the hatch-seal retaining bar has been admitted.c) The tolerances for a, b, a1 and b2 have been added in tables 2 and 3.d) The text of 3.4.2 has been supplemented.e) The distance between the hinge's pivot and the coaming has been changed from 55 mm to 60 mm.f) The minimum tensile strength of the steel for coamings, cover plates, hinges, etc. has been changed to340 N/mm2.g) The designation has been added.h) The standard has been editorially revised.SIST EN ISO 5778:2000
