Aerospace series - Ball bearings, rigid in corrosion resisting steel cadmium plated, for control cable pulleys - Dimensions and loads
This European Standard specifies the characteristics of ball bearings fitted with shields of seals, for aircraft control cable pulleys.
Höchstdruckfett, auf Basis synthetischer Kohlenwasserstoffe, für den allgemeinen Gebrauch (Code B), Betriebsbereich 54 °C bis 177 °C (vergleiche EN 2062);

Overview
EN 3182:2012 - part of the Aerospace series - defines ball bearings, rigid in corrosion-resisting steel cadmium plated, for control cable pulleys. This CEN standard specifies dimensions, tolerances, clearances, loads and marking for bearings used in aircraft control cable pulley assemblies. It covers bearings fitted with shields or seals, typical bore sizes (codes 05–15 correspond to nominal bores 5 mm to 15 mm), and the environmental/operational limits for use in aerospace systems.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope & temperature: Bearings are qualified for use from −54 °C to 150 °C. When lubricated, field limits depend on grease type:
- Code A (ester high‑pressure): operational to 121 °C (lubricant range −73 °C to 121 °C)
- Code B (synthetic hydrocarbon high‑pressure): operational to 177 °C (lubricant range −54 °C to 177 °C)
- Dimensions & tolerances: Detailed tabulated values for bore, outside diameter, width, tolerances, clearances, starting torque and permissible static radial load. Configuration drawings (code options) and assembly with shields or seals are defined.
- Surface finish: Raceway and rolling elements Ra = 0.2 µm; bore, side faces and cylindrical outer surface Ra = 0.8 µm.
- Materials & hardness: Inner ring, outer ring and balls: steel EN 2030 (hardened and tempered, ≥ 58 HRC). Shields: corrosion-resisting material. Seals: PTFE or PTFE with glass‑fibre reinforcement.
- Surface treatment: Cadmium plating (5–12 µm) applied to specified surfaces per EN 2133; note that bore and raceway are not cadmium plated. De‑embrittlement heat treatment required within 16 hours after plating.
- Performance limits: Runout, starting torque and permissible static radial loads are specified and measured on bearings not fitted to pulleys.
- Designation & marking: Standardized identity block format (includes standard number, grease code, seal/shield code and size). Manufacturer marking and position rules are stipulated.
Applications and Users
- Primary application: aircraft control cable pulleys (flight control systems, actuation linkages).
- Typical users:
- Aerospace OEMs and component designers specifying bearings for cable pulley assemblies
- Procurement and quality engineers ensuring compliance with EN 3182:2012
- Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations selecting replacement bearings
- Certification and qualification teams validating material, plating and lubrication requirements
Related Standards
- EN 2030 - Steel FE‑PM3501 (X105CrMo17) for bearing rings and balls
- EN 2133 - Cadmium plating requirements and passivation
- EN 2062 - Technical specification for fully non‑metallic body pulleys with bearings (referenced for supplied bearings)
EN 3182:2012 is a focused standard for designers and suppliers of aerospace control cable pulley bearings, providing precise dimensional, material and performance requirements to ensure safe, reliable operation in aircraft systems.
